Those are different activities. Nintendo describes modchips as devices that bypass console security and warns that unauthorized circumvention products may damage a console, affect online functionality, or cause problems after network updates. The sources available here do not establish current chip compatibility or provide safe installation instructions.
What does modding a Switch OLED mean?
The term is broad, so it helps to separate three things:

- Hardware circumvention: installing a modchip, which Nintendo characterizes as a device used to bypass security measures embedded in its consoles, including Nintendo Switch.
- Unauthorized software or game use: running software or copies of games that are not authorized. Nintendo specifically objects to circumvention products and their use with unauthorized game copies.
- Repair or ordinary customization: replacing a damaged component or changing the console’s appearance without bypassing security. A repair guide is not an installation guide for a modchip.
Nintendo’s description and policy are published in its Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ. They express Nintendo’s position; they are not a complete legal analysis for every country or every kind of personal modification.
What risks does Nintendo identify?
Nintendo warns that unauthorized products that circumvent its security measures may damage a product, and says resulting damage is not covered by its warranty. It also warns that such devices may reduce functionality, including online play, and that a console may stop working following network updates. These are Nintendo’s stated risks, not quantified failure or ban rates.
#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
That distinction matters before making a decision: a console that has been modified may face both practical risks and a more complicated repair conversation. The cited support pages do not promise factory service for a console modified with circumvention products.
Can you install a modchip using a screwdriver kit?
No. A repair tool list should not be mistaken for a modchip installation kit. iFixit’s Nintendo Switch OLED motherboard replacement guide lists Phillips and tri-point screwdrivers, opening picks, a spudger, tweezers, isopropyl alcohol, and other items for that specific repair. It does not establish that these tools are sufficient for a modchip installation or that the procedure is safe.
Rank #2
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
Because the evidence here does not establish current hardware or firmware compatibility, installation steps, or success rates, there is no reliable basis here for recommending a particular chip or describing a working installation method.
Does modding a Switch OLED violate the law?
The answer depends on jurisdiction and what is done. Nintendo says importing, marketing, selling, or distributing circumvention products is illegal, and says using them with unauthorized copies of games is unlawful. Those statements describe Nintendo’s published position; they do not resolve the legality of every personal modification or homebrew use around the world. For a legal decision, consult authoritative guidance for the relevant jurisdiction rather than treating Nintendo’s policy as a universal ruling.
Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What should you do if the OLED model needs repair?
If the issue is damage or a hardware fault, use Nintendo’s troubleshooting and service pathways before attempting invasive work. Nintendo’s Switch system or accessory troubleshooting page covers the OLED model and directs owners with physical damage to service options; Nintendo states that physical damage is not covered by warranty. Its Factory Service Terms & Conditions say service may be available for a fee when a product is out of warranty or the issue is not covered.
For official service versus independent repair, compare the factors that matter for your situation rather than assuming one route is always cheaper or safer:
- Whether the console is still under warranty and whether the damage is covered.
- What work the provider will actually perform and what qualifications it has for that repair.
- The quoted cost, turnaround, and any limits on service for modified consoles.
The cited Nintendo pages do not state that a modified console will be accepted for factory service, so ask the provider directly before sending it in.
