Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024, with a 2TB SSD, a more capable graphics processor and its PSSR upscaling technology. Sony said it could render gameplay up to 45% faster than the then-current PS5, but that is a company claim—not a universal game-performance guarantee. Enhanced features depend on the game.

What are the PS5 Pro specs?

Sony’s official safety guide for the CFI-71XX model lists the following hardware. Sony notes that specifications and design can change without notice, and that software versions may affect operation.

Component PS5 Pro specification
CPU x86-64 AMD Ryzen “Zen 2,” 8 cores and 16 threads
GPU 16.7 TFLOPS; AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine
Memory 16 GB GDDR6 plus 2 GB DDR5
Storage 2TB custom SSD
Expansion M.2 SSD expansion port

The specifications are from Sony’s CFI-71XX safety guide. The console also launched with a DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed, according to Sony’s September 2024 announcement.

How much faster is PS5 Pro than PS5?

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s September 2024 comparison with the then-current PS5 said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory, enabling “up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.” Those are Sony’s headline hardware and rendering claims, not independent benchmark results or a promise that every game will run 45% faster.

PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

Sony also said the Pro’s advanced ray tracing can cast rays at double—and at times triple—the speed of the then-current PS5. The company presented this as enabling more dynamic reflections and refractions. Actual results depend on how a game implements and supports the feature.

What do PSSR, 4K and high frame rates mean in games?

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning-based image upscaling technology. It is designed to improve image clarity by reconstructing a higher-resolution image from a game’s rendered output; it is not a guarantee that every title renders natively at 4K.

Sony’s current US PS5 Pro page says compatible games can combine ray tracing, AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR, and 60 frames per second or up to 120 frames per second on a 4K TV. The key qualification is “compatible games”: supported features and graphics modes vary by title. Sony’s September 2024 announcement likewise said Pro-enhanced features would be available only in select enhanced games and would vary from game to game.

For a specific game, check its current PS5 Pro support and graphics-mode options. The general console specification alone cannot establish that game’s resolution, frame rate or ray-tracing performance.

Does PS5 Pro include a disc drive?

No. PS5 Pro is disc-less by default. Sony said buyers could purchase the PS5 Disc Drive separately; check current model compatibility and availability before buying. If physical game discs or movie playback matter to you, include the separate drive in your decision rather than assuming it comes in the console box.

How does PS5 Pro compare with standard PS5?

The Pro’s practical advantage is not a single across-the-board frame-rate multiplier. It combines more capable graphics hardware, PSSR and support for enhanced modes in selected games. Standard PS5 remains the less costly way to play PS5 games when Pro-specific visual options are not a priority.

Graphics and ray tracing Sony claims 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory, up to 45% faster gameplay rendering, and ray tracing at double or sometimes triple the speed of the then-current PS5 (Sony, 2024). Is PS5 Pro worth it for 4K gaming?

It is most compelling if you want the option of higher visual fidelity or smoother frame rates in games that specifically support PS5 Pro enhancements, and you are comfortable paying for the upgrade and any separate disc drive you need. It is harder to justify on the basis of a blanket “45% faster” expectation: Sony described that as up to 45% faster rendering, and compatible features vary by game.

Sony’s current US product page says the console can play over 8,500 PS4 games and that Game Boost can provide faster or smoother frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. The wording is deliberately limited to “some”; it does not promise the same improvement in every older game. Check the titles you play most and their Pro support before deciding whether the hardware premium is worthwhile.

At launch, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, said: “With PlayStation 5 Pro, we wanted to make sure that the most dedicated gamers, as well as game creators, could utilize the most advanced console technology, taking the PlayStation 5 experience even farther,” Sony’s November 2024 launch release. That statement describes Sony’s positioning, rather than an independent assessment of the upgrade.
