Arceus is Pokémon’s clearest creator figure: official Pokémon material says it is said to have shaped all there is in the world. More precisely, the Pokédex places that account in Sinnoh legend, so “God” is a useful shorthand for Arceus’s mythological role—not a universal title the games establish for every Pokémon story.
Why Arceus is called Pokémon’s creator
The official Pokémon Legends: Arceus profile says, “Arceus is said to have shaped all there is in this world.” That makes Arceus the Pokémon most directly associated with creation, and the central answer when someone asks who plays God in Pokémon.
The wording matters: Arceus is “said to have” done this. The profile presents a mythic account, not a narrator’s declaration that settles every question about divinity across the franchise. Calling Arceus the creator figure is faithful to the source; treating “God” as an exact, universal title goes further than it does.
What Sinnoh’s legend says about Arceus
The official Pokédex entry gives the fuller version: “According to the legends of Sinnoh, this Pokémon emerged from an egg and shaped all there is in this world.” In that account, Arceus’s origin and world-shaping role belong to Sinnoh mythology.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set in Hisui, a region that the official story page says will in time be called Sinnoh. The game therefore explores the past of the region whose legends tell the creation story; it does not turn that regional myth into a claim about religion outside the fiction.
Is Arceus the only Pokémon called a god?
No. Sinnoh lore also uses deity language for other powerful Pokémon. In an official release, The Pokémon Company describes Palkia as a deity in Sinnoh-region mythology and associates it with the ability to distort space.

| Pokémon | What the official source says | Associated role or ability |
|---|---|---|
| Arceus | “Said to have shaped all there is in this world”; the Pokédex attributes the account to Sinnoh legends. | Creator figure; world-shaping. |
| Palkia | Described by The Pokémon Company as a deity in Sinnoh-region mythology. | Can distort space. |
This comparison shows why “Arceus is God” can be an oversimplification: the lore gives more than one Pokémon divine or mythic significance. The available official descriptions do not provide a complete ranking of their power or a definitive hierarchy among them.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus for Nintendo Switch is the game most directly tied to this mythology. Nintendo describes it as a game set in ancient Hisui and explicitly raises the question of how Arceus is involved in the story. Playing it is one way to experience the setting and narrative; it is not required to understand the basic answer.
