Which Original Switch Games Run Better or Worse on Switch 2? What the Community List Shows

Original Nintendo Switch games behave differently on Switch 2 depending on the title, and the clearest public record of those differences is a player-run Reddit thread, not a Nintendo test. The thread collects user reports on whether old games load, run smoother, look better, or break on the newer hardware. Those reports are useful for spotting possible improvements and defects, but they are anecdotes. They are not standardized benchmarks, and they are not Nintendo compatibility certification. For a current answer on any specific game, check Nintendo’s game-specific status first, then read the community reports as context.

What the community list is

The list is a Reddit thread titled “Post Your Tested Games – Compatibility or Performance on Switch 2.” Notebookcheck covered it in a June 17, 2025 report, describing it as a space for original Switch games and their “performance, optimizations or deterioration” on Switch 2. Users who have tried a game on the newer console post their impressions, and the thread is positioned as a complement to Nintendo’s own compatibility lists rather than a replacement for them.

The thread mixes several kinds of evidence in one place. Some posts describe how a game feels: loading times, frame pacing, or stutter. Some describe how it looks: sharper or blurrier image, lower textures, or visual glitches. Some report whether a game works at all. And some entries cover Switch 2 Edition versions, which are separate products from the original Switch releases. Because these are mixed together, a post saying a game “runs better” needs to be read against the version and the kind of improvement being described.

How to read a report

Before trusting or repeating a post, separate the three questions it may be answering. Most disagreements in the thread come from mixing them up.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Question What it covers What a community post can tell you What it cannot tell you
Does it start and allow progress? Launch, save data, and whether the game can be completed or played in the intended way Whether a tester hit a blocker on their own copy and at a given update Whether the same problem affects every copy, region, or later patch
Does it perform more consistently or load faster? Frame rate, slowdown, stutter, and loading time How the player perceived the game, sometimes with a stated frame-rate figure A measured, repeatable frame-rate or load-time result under controlled conditions
Does it look better or show graphical defects? Resolution, textures, draw distance, and visual glitches What the tester saw on screen, which may be described in general terms A side-by-side comparison with the original Switch version, unless the poster made one

Reports also carry a version problem. A post may describe the original Switch release, a patched release, or a Switch 2 Edition. Only the first is a direct answer to “does this old Switch game work on Switch 2,” so the version should be read before the verdict.

Examples from the thread

The thread contains specific, checkable-sounding claims, but each one is a participant’s account rather than a documented test.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

A Reddit participant wrote: “Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night – Almost all stuttering slowdown and frame drops are gone. it now runs at a stable 30 fps.” The post reports fewer stutters and drops and a steady 30 fps. It does not state the update version, the measurement method, or whether the comparison was made against the original Switch hardware. Treat it as one player’s experience of an improvement.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

An entry in the thread describes a graphical issue and low textures on characters and the map. This is a visual report, not a performance one. It points to a possible downgrade in appearance, but the thread does not establish how widespread it is or whether it persists after any later update.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom

The thread lists both games under Switch 2 Versions. These entries describe Switch 2 Edition software, so they should not be presented as evidence that the original Switch releases run unchanged on Switch 2.

What Nintendo’s guidance says

Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance states: “The Nintendo Switch 2 console’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” The same guidance says future testing and updates may increase the number of supported games. It also warns that some games may take longer to become playable, may have partial functionality issues, or may not be supported at all.

Nintendo tells buyers to check game-specific compatibility before purchasing. Its U.S. compatibility page separates software that cannot be used from games with compatibility issues, and it labels that issue information as current as of June 5, 2025. The page directs readers to the individual game page or the Nintendo eShop for the latest status. The Singapore compatibility page similarly asks readers to use its search tool to check the current status.

Official status covers mainly whether a game works and which known problems exist. It is not a measure of frame rate, load time, or image quality. Those are the areas where the community thread is most active, and where it is least standardized.

Checking current status

Because compatibility changes, check in this order before relying on any report:

  1. Open Nintendo’s compatibility page for your region and search for the exact game title.
  2. Open the individual game page or the Nintendo eShop listing and read the current status and any known issues.
  3. Check which version the status applies to, and whether it is the original Switch release or a Switch 2 Edition.
  4. Look for a dated community post that names the update version it tested, then compare that with the current official status.

An independent, unaffiliated compatibility tracker draws on Nintendo eShop information and refreshes twice a day. When accessed, it showed “Last updated at: 2026-10-07 21:09 UTC.” Its frequent refresh is a reminder that the picture changes. A June 27, 2026 Nintendo Everything report documented another set of compatibility fixes, so a status that was accurate in 2025 may no longer be accurate today.

The Joy-Con limitation

Some games and modes need controller features that the included Joy-Con 2 does not provide. Nintendo says the original right Joy-Con has an IR Motion Camera that Joy-Con 2 lacks. For certain game modes or features, Nintendo says an original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con must be connected wirelessly, and some original accessories require original Joy-Con. This matters only for those specific games and modes. It does not fix software compatibility or performance problems in general.

What to take from the list

The community list is best used as a map of where to look, not as a verdict. Posts can point to a game that improved noticeably, one that shows visual regressions, or one where a Switch 2 Edition exists that changes the picture entirely. Confirm the claim against the game’s current official status, note the version tested, and keep “runs better” (smoother play or quicker loading) separate from “looks different” or “has a glitch.” Those are different outcomes, and the thread does not give them a single score.

Source dates matter here. The Notebookcheck report on the thread is from June 17, 2025, Nintendo’s U.S. issue summary is dated June 5, 2025, and the tracker and later fix reporting are from 2026. Any single post in the thread should be read against the date and version it gives, since fixes and patches can change the outcome after it was written.
