The promotion ended on August 16, 2010, but the item did not disappear: Steam’s Community Market still lists Earbuds, with availability that can change over time and by region.
Why did Earbuds appear in TF2?
Valve introduced Earbuds to promote Team Fortress 2’s release on Mac. Its 2010 campaign page said that anyone logging into the game from a Mac would receive a limited-edition set of in-game earbuds wearable by any class. They were a digital TF2 cosmetic—not physical Apple earbuds.

When did the Earbuds promotion end?
The Official Team Fortress Wiki records an initial award window of June 10–14, 2010, later extended through August 16. Valve’s Mac Update page confirms August 16, 2010, as the final deadline for playing TF2 on a Mac to receive the free item. That deadline closed the original promotion; it did not remove Earbuds from player inventories.
What do Earbuds look and sound like in-game?
Earbuds are wearable by all classes. The Official Team Fortress Wiki’s item entry describes white musical-note visuals that appear intermittently, with no associated sound effect. The item also has a Scout character quote: “Ear buds. What the hell am I supposed to do with ear buds? Play Sarah McLachlan at a guy until he gets so sad he dies?”

Can you still get Earbuds in TF2?
The original Mac-login offer is over, so installing TF2 on a Mac today does not qualify a player for that 2010 reward. However, Earbuds remain part of TF2’s item economy: the Steam Community Market listing currently shows the cosmetic and active listings. This is a separate way to find the item, not evidence that Valve’s old promotion has reopened. Listings, prices, and visibility can change; what appears may vary by region and account state.
Are Earbuds tradeable?
The Official Team Fortress Wiki marks Earbuds as tradeable and giftable. That status is specific to this item; it should not be taken to mean every limited-availability TF2 item can be traded. Valve’s Mann-Conomy FAQ notes that some limited-availability items are not tradeable.
