Unreal Tournament 2004 can be downloaded free through the OldUnreal community project, which provides an installer for the game and its community patch. The project has Epic’s blessing, but this is a community-run release—not a new Epic Games storefront launch. OldUnreal’s instructions cover Windows, Linux, and macOS, including modern 64-bit Intel and Apple silicon systems.
What is free, and who provides it?
OldUnreal offers a downloader that obtains the original game files, installs UT2004, and applies patches. The project also provides separate instructions for updating an existing copy. OldUnreal says the work is done “with Epic’s blessing” and directs support questions to its community rather than Epic. The project team describes its motivation simply: “We’re doing this for free because we’re fans of the game and we like a challenge.”

OldUnreal release author Stijn-volckaert called the patch “the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 20 years.” That is the release author’s description of the time since a public patch, not a claim that Epic has reissued the game.
Which patch is available, and what is its status?
The latest release listed on the UT2004Patches GitHub releases page is UT2004 Patch 3374 – Preview 23. The release note describes it as intended to be the final public preview before release candidates. It is still a preview, not a final release; check the release page for a newer build and its current status before downloading.

Does UT2004 run on Windows, Linux, and macOS?
OldUnreal describes its patch as supporting modern Windows, Linux, and macOS systems. For Linux and macOS, the project specifically cites 64-bit Intel and ARM/Apple CPUs. Those platform builds use SDL3; their patch distributions also include a functional UCC tool for UnrealScript compilation and texture compression. Consult the project’s platform-specific instructions and the exact release assets for your system.
There is a known text-input issue in Preview 23: the numpad does not work in chat or text fields on Linux and macOS. The release note says a fix is expected in the first release candidate, so check newer notes if this affects you.

How to install UT2004
For a fresh installation
- Open OldUnreal’s UT2004 download page and choose the downloader and instructions for your operating system.
- Run the downloader to obtain the original game files, install the game, and apply the available patch.
- Use the matching platform instructions and release notes to confirm you have the right build for your operating system and architecture.
For an existing installation
- Back up the game’s
Systemdirectory before changing files. - Follow OldUnreal’s instructions for extracting the patch and updating
UT2004.ini; use the correct executable for your setup. - On Windows, do not install the game under
Program Files(called “My Programs” in the project’s warning), where permissions can interfere with the setup.
OldUnreal warns that updating an existing Linux or macOS installation may require manual work and recommends a fresh installation using its instructions. Its download page provides the relevant installation and patching guidance.

OldUnreal says patched and unpatched clients can generally play on one another’s servers. Compatibility is not guaranteed in every setup: some mods check the game version, with AntiTCC cited as an example, and some older servers have a network compatibility issue involving official 3369.3 files. If you depend on a particular mod or legacy server, check its requirements before updating.
