Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is commonly placed in 2045 for its Specialist HQ storyline. That date does not apply automatically to every part of the game: Black Ops 4 has distinct Multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout modes, and the official material does not give them one universal setting year.
What year is the Specialist HQ storyline set in?
GamesRadar+ places Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in 2045 in its Black Ops chronology guide, discussing the game’s Specialist HQ missions as its narrative-focused material. Treat 2045 as a commonly used secondary-source date for that storyline, rather than an official date for every mode.

Activision describes Multiplayer as the center of the game’s narrative, with Specialist-focused experiences that explore who the Specialists are and the battles they fight. Its official game description frames that fiction around Multiplayer; it does not state a universal year for Black Ops 4.
Does that mean every Black Ops 4 mode takes place in 2045?
No single date should be applied to all the game’s content. Activision’s May 17, 2018 reveal presents Multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout as distinct experiences. The 2045 placement concerns Specialist HQ, not a confirmed timeline for every Zombies map or Blackout match.

Zombies has its own stories
At launch, Activision highlighted three Zombies experiences: IX, Voyage of Despair, and Blood of the Dead. They are separate from the Specialist HQ storyline, and the official material cited here does not establish one date that covers every Zombies map. The official Operations page offers further context for the continuing Aether Zombies story.
Blackout is a separate mode
Blackout is another distinct experience identified in Activision’s reveal. The available official descriptions do not assign it the Specialist HQ year, so 2045 should not be presented as a confirmed date for Blackout.

Where can you find more Specialist backstory?
Activision’s official Specialist comics page describes a ten-issue series introducing the Specialists. In 2019, Activision announced a 248-page hardcover collection compiling all ten comics, with background material for Specialist HQ and Multiplayer. The comics add character context; they are supplementary lore, not independent confirmation that all of Black Ops 4 takes place in 2045.
