Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Yes—if you have an Xbox Series X with a disc drive, the Xbox One game is supported, and it offers an offline-capable mode. Complete the console’s initial online setup first, install any required game files or updates, and keep the disc in the drive while you play. A disc does not guarantee that every part of a game works offline.
What you need for offline disc play
- A disc-drive Xbox Series X. The disc-based method requires an optical drive; it does not apply to a digital-only console.
- A supported Xbox One game. Series X|S backward compatibility covers selected Xbox One titles, not every game. Check your exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility information.
- An offline-capable mode. A supported game can still require a connection for online multiplayer or other network-dependent features. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit guidance says, “If the console is offline, the system will only launch titles that have at least one mode of play that doesn’t require connectivity.” See Microsoft’s offline-play best practices.
- Initial console setup completed. The Xbox Series X|S manual lists initial setup, downloads, and mandatory updates among tasks that require internet access. See the Xbox Series X|S manual.
Set up and play the disc
- While connected to the internet, finish console setup. If the Xbox is new or has been reset, complete its initial setup and any account or profile steps shown on screen.
- Check compatibility for the exact game. Confirm that the Xbox One title is in the supported backward-compatible catalog.
- Install the game and required files. Insert the disc and follow the console’s prompts. Xbox says disc-based backward-compatible games begin downloading to the hard drive after the disc is inserted; the disc may not contain all the files needed for the current installation. Some games also need a system or game update before first launch.
- Start the game and identify its offline mode. Complete any connection-dependent setup the game requires, then use its local, campaign, or other offline-capable mode.
- Leave the disc in the drive. The disc supplies the entitlement for ordinary disc-based play. Removing it means the console no longer has that disc to verify.
What works offline—and what may not
Offline play is decided by the game’s modes and requirements, not by the disc alone. A local campaign or other offline mode may work after setup and installation, while online multiplayer, cloud features, and services that need a network will not. Some titles may require a download or update before they can start, and the amount of game data supplied on disc varies.
Microsoft’s developer guidance also notes that disc packaging and generation-specific game packages can affect which version is installed and how offline Smart Delivery behaves. If a title has separate Xbox One and Series X|S packages, do not assume the disc alone contains every file needed for the version the console installs.
If the game will not start without internet
- Check the console’s setup status. If initial setup was never completed, reconnect and finish it.
- Install pending downloads or mandatory updates. A disc does not necessarily provide the complete current game.
- Verify the game is supported. Check the exact title against Xbox’s backward-compatibility information.
- Check the game’s offline requirements. It must have at least one mode that does not require connectivity; some titles or features are online-only.
- Reinsert the disc and keep it in the drive. Disc-based play requires the disc for verification.
Microsoft’s public guidance does not establish a complete title-by-title matrix showing whether every game installs fully from disc or launches offline after installation. If the issue persists, check the game publisher’s requirements for that specific edition.

Disc play is different from claiming a digital copy
In an August 2026 announcement, Xbox Wire described a feature for claiming a digital entitlement by inserting and launching a supported Xbox One or Series X disc. That is a separate process from playing the physical disc, and the announcement does not establish that claiming the digital entitlement can be done offline. Do not rely on it as a substitute for completing setup or verifying offline disc play. See Xbox Wire’s announcement.
