You can play VALORANT on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S for free with a Riot Account. Xbox and PlayStation players can play together, but console matchmaking is separate from PC. To get started, check regional availability, download the game from your console’s store through Riot’s official page, sign in, and work through the tutorial before entering matches.
Which consoles support VALORANT?
Riot lists VALORANT for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside PC. The console edition is not listed for older PlayStation or Xbox generations. Riot says it focused on Gen9 consoles—PS5 and Xbox Series X/S—for its console adaptation. That describes Riot’s development focus, not a promise about performance on a particular setup. Check Riot’s platform selector for the current supported platforms and store links.
Availability can depend on your region. Riot announced that console access went live in Australia and New Zealand on September 23, 2026, with access to the Sydney server. The announcement gave local launch times, but those are launch-day details rather than a guarantee of ongoing service. Confirm that your regional store offers the game before troubleshooting an unavailable download.
How to install and start playing
- Check your platform and region. Confirm that you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and that VALORANT is available in your console’s regional store.
- Open Riot’s console page. Use Riot’s VALORANT console page to follow its PlayStation or Xbox store link.
- Download the game and sign in. You need a Riot Account. Sign in with an existing account or create one when prompted.
- Complete the tutorial. It introduces shooting, Agent abilities, and the match format. Then use the available practice options before choosing an Agent to focus on.
VALORANT is free to play on console. Riot says you do not need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play; those subscriptions are not a requirement for access.

Can console players play with PC friends?
Xbox and PlayStation players can play together. Console players cannot join games with PC players: Riot separates console and PC matchmaking to preserve competitive integrity and a consistent experience. If your friend group plays on both console platforms, you can play together; if some friends play on PC, they will need to join you on a supported console to play in the console matchmaking pool.
Does progress carry between console and PC?
Riot says console and PC share account progression when you use the same Riot Account. Battlepass progress, recruited Agents, purchased skins, and other earned or bought items carry across platforms; progress does not reset when you move between console and PC. This shared progression does not remove the separation between console and PC matchmaking.

How should a beginner learn the controls and match basics?
Start with the tutorial and practice
Riot’s Patch 8.11 notes, published in 2024, describe a console tutorial covering shooting mechanics, Agent abilities, and match format. They also describe an Open Range practice option, an optional AI bot training match structured like a Swift Play match on Haven, and New Player Tips that respond to in-match actions. These are launch-era descriptions, so exact options and menu names may have changed. Follow the training options shown in your current client rather than assuming every feature remains in the same place.
Choose a control preset, then adjust it
Riot’s June 25, 2024 Patch 9.0 notes describe a first-boot choice between a VALORANT-specific preset and a traditional console FPS preset, with later customization in Settings. The notes also mention aim-sensitivity controls and fine adjustment. Treat those labels as historical: use the current Settings menu to find the available control and sensitivity options, and make small changes after you have tried the default preset.

What do the four Agent roles do?
Roles describe how an Agent can help the team; they are not rules that lock you into one way of playing. Try different roles in practice before deciding which Agents suit you.
- Duelist: Opens engagements and takes fights.
- Controller: Shapes the battlefield with tools such as smokes, temporary walls, and traps.
- Sentinel: Supports the team and defends territory.
- Initiator: Helps locate, disable, or flush out opponents.
What to consider before choosing a platform
If you already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, you can use that supported console; you do not need to buy another device just for VALORANT. Choose based on the console you have, whether your regional store offers the game, and where your friends play. Cross-platform play is supported between Xbox and PlayStation, while PC matchmaking is separate. Riot’s official platform page links to the console stores.
