If a Valheim world on Xbox has reset to Day 1, Iron Gate says the known size-related reset bug was fixed in Patch 0.214.300 in March 2023. A separate, rare issue that could remove objects from parts of a world was fixed in Patch 1.0.17, dated October 6, 2026; Iron Gate said the update could take a few days to reach every platform. Check your console for the current update, then use the in-game backup controls to see whether a useful copy of the world is available. Recovery depends on that backup containing the progress you need.
First identify what happened to the world
Different symptoms can have different causes, so do not assume every damaged-looking save is the old Day 1 reset bug.
- It loads at Day 1: This matches the historical Xbox reset issue Iron Gate fixed in Patch 0.214.300. The studio has not published a current frequency for this problem.
- The world is marked corrupt, errors while loading, or is missing metadata: Iron Gate’s June 2023 notes document restoring affected worlds from the most recent backup through the Select World menu.
- The world loads, but objects are missing from an area: Patch 1.0.17 addresses a different, rare bug that could erase objects from parts of a world when a large save chunk was split into smaller files.
- The world is missing from the list: The official patch notes discuss save and backup safeguards, but do not establish a single cause or guarantee recovery for a missing world. Check the available in-game saves and backups before changing stored data.
Check for the latest Xbox update
Iron Gate’s October 6, 2026 announcement for Patch 1.0.17 says the update fixes the rare partial-world object-loss bug. The studio said platform uploads might take a few days, so the announcement does not confirm that the patch is already installed on your Xbox or available in your region. Check the game’s update status on the console; do not treat the announcement date as proof that your copy has updated.
Inspect and restore a Valheim backup
Use the game’s built-in recovery controls before trying more drastic changes. Iron Gate’s June 12, 2023 Patch 0.216.9 notes say worlds with corruption, load errors, or missing metadata can be restored from the most recent backup in the Select World menu.

- After restoration, load the world and check whether the expected progress is present.
For the historical Day 1 reset, Iron Gate’s March 29, 2023 Patch 0.214.300 announcement says recovery through Manage Saves requires a backup with enough data. The studio’s June notes also describe automatic backups around version transitions, but that does not mean every backup contains all progress or that every lost world can be recovered. If no usable backup includes the missing progress, the official guidance cited here does not guarantee another recovery route.
What the Xbox save patches did—and did not—change
The Day 1 reset bug was fixed in 2023
Iron Gate said Patch 0.214.300 fixed the Xbox bug that reset worlds to Day 1 after they reached a certain size. The announcement noted that logs might show the build as .305 while the in-game menu showed .300 because of platform differences. That historical fix does not establish how often similar reports occur today.

Cloud-save safeguards followed
In its April 12, 2023 Patch 0.215.2 notes, Iron Gate described improved world-save stability and performance for Xbox and Microsoft Store, plus detection of saves corrupted by incomplete cloud-storage operations so they would not start as empty worlds. The notes also mention fixes involving missing .fwl files and backup restoration. These were safeguards and fixes in that patch, not a guarantee that future save problems are impossible.
The 2026 object-loss fix is a separate issue
Patch 1.0.17 concerns objects disappearing from parts of a world when a large world-save chunk was split into smaller files. Iron Gate did not say this issue resets a world to Day 1, so treat it as distinct from the 2023 reset bug.

Can you access an Xbox Valheim save on PC?
Iron Gate’s July 2026 FAQ says Xbox saves can be accessed on PC by using the Microsoft Store version of Valheim. The FAQ does not describe this as a separate repair service or provide a PC-specific recovery procedure. It also says there is no broader cross-platform save synchronization beyond that access.
Avoid deleting save data as a first response
The official guidance cited here supports using Valheim’s in-game backup manager. It does not establish that deleting a local or cloud copy will restore a newer or uncorrupted save. Inspect available backups first, and do not remove stored copies unless you understand which version they contain and have a recovery plan.
