On Steam, add -console in the game’s launch options; Xbox has the console enabled by default. Vanilla single-player cheats are separate from multiplayer server-admin commands. For added mod commands, the original SkToolBox is a legacy option with unconfirmed compatibility for Valheim 1.0; a separate fork, SpeelosToolbox, is listed as rebuilt for 1.0.
How to enable the Valheim console
Iron Gate’s platform-specific instructions explain how to make the console available. Once in a world, press F5 to open it; with a controller, use LB + LT + Start. If F5 does not work, check whether your keyboard’s function-key mode is intercepting it.
- Steam: Open Library → Valheim → Properties → General → Launch Options, enter
-console, and launch the game from Steam. - Microsoft Store: Add
-consoleto the target of a shortcut to the game executable. This is not the Steam launch-options route. - Xbox: The console is enabled by default.
- Mac App Store: Iron Gate’s instructions use Terminal to launch the game with the console argument.
After opening the console, enter devcommands and execute it. Iron Gate says, “Most console commands become eligible only after typing and executing devcommands command.” Follow the platform-specific directions in Valheim Support’s developer-mode instructions if setup differs on your system.
How to use vanilla Valheim cheats
Open the console in a single-player world, type devcommands, and press Enter. Then enter a command and execute it. The examples below are common uses, not a guarantee that every command or behavior will remain unchanged across game updates. Type help in your installed version to see the commands it exposes.

Character and combat

Map and travel
goto [x,z]moves the character to the specified map coordinates. Use the coordinate format shown by your game’s command help.
Time and saving
todadjusts the time of day.savesaves the world.
Creative-style building and debug mode
Enter debugmode to switch to a creative-style mode. The documented controls include:
- B: build without material costs.
- Z: fly.
- K: kill nearby creatures.
These commands and controls are described in the PC Gamer Valheim command reference; check your own in-game help output rather than assuming a static list is timeless.

Vanilla cheats are not server-admin commands
Single-player cheats and multiplayer administration are different command contexts. The reference describes cheats such as god as single-player commands that do not work on multiplayer servers. Server-admin operations include commands such as kicking, banning, unbanning, and pinging players. Access to those operations depends on the server context and permissions; enabling the console does not grant server-admin status.
What SkToolBox adds
SkToolBox extends console and chat commands beyond the vanilla set. Its Nexus Mods documentation lists examples including /god, /give, /spawn, /fly, /tp, and /coords, as well as terrain operations. It requires BepInEx and is installed on the client. Client-side installation does not mean every command is private: the listing warns that commands can significantly affect other players in multiplayer.

Terrain commands need special caution
The SkToolBox listing says terrain modification is not working properly after the latest Valheim update and recommends backing up the world before using terrain commands. Extensive edits may also cause lag. Until the mod’s page confirms a fix, do not rely on its terrain tools for dependable world editing.
Original SkToolBox or the Valheim 1.0 fork?
The original SkToolBox and SpeelosToolbox are separate listings. The reviewed evidence gives no confirmation that the original works with Valheim 1.0, while the fork describes itself as rebuilt for 1.0. These are mod-page claims, not an independent compatibility guarantee; check each listing’s latest release notes against your installed game version before installing.

Get the server owner’s consent before using mod commands in multiplayer. A command can affect other players or shared world state even when the mod itself is installed client-side. SpeelosToolbox’s listing distinguishes local visual effects from shared changes and server operations that require admin status; confirm what a command does before running it.

Do not assume cheats or mods preserve achievements. SpeelosToolbox documents a setting that interacts with modded and cheat flags, but that behavior depends on its version and configuration. The listing says achievements missed earlier are not awarded retroactively. Check the mod’s current configuration notes and your game’s behavior before relying on achievement handling.
