As GameSpot summarizes Valve’s reasoning, console makers may subsidize hardware and make up costs through software and services, while Steam Machine belongs to a more open PC ecosystem. That is Valve’s framing; the report does not quantify the economics or establish a like-for-like cost comparison across platforms.

How to judge the price against a console or PC
A headline price alone is not enough to tell whether Steam Machine is the better buy. Compare each option using the same assumptions rather than treating the 512GB system, the 2TB bundle, and a console package as interchangeable.
- Total cost: Include the storage tier and any controller or other accessories you would otherwise buy separately.
- Performance: Match the games and display resolution you care about. Without a current, like-for-like comparison, there is no basis here to claim equivalent performance.
- Storage: Compare capacity and the practical cost of adding or replacing storage.
- Upgradeability and repair: Consider which parts you can change or service, and how much configuration you are willing to handle.
- Games and existing library: Account for the games you already own, availability on each platform, and any platform preferences.
- Convenience: Weigh a compact, turnkey system and living-room footprint against the component choices and build effort of a custom PC.
A compact gaming PC is another relevant category, but a fair value judgment requires a specific system’s current specifications and price. The available figures do not identify a particular PC alternative or show that one is a better deal.

Valve’s Steam Machine Limited Drop Program Terms describe an ordering program with account, age, purchase-history, and regional eligibility conditions. Because terms and availability can change, check the current official page before assuming you are eligible or that the reported configurations can be ordered.
