Steam PayPal Payments Are Limited to Six Currencies, With No Fix Date

Steam says PayPal works only for purchases charged in six currencies. Valve has no announced date for restoring it in other currencies.

Steam currently accepts PayPal only when the purchase is charged in euros (EUR), Canadian dollars (CAD), British pounds (GBP), Japanese yen (JPY), Australian dollars (AUD) or US dollars (USD). Valve says PayPal’s acquiring bank ended processing for Steam transactions in certain other currencies in early July 2025. Valve hopes to restore PayPal in those currencies, but says the timeline is uncertain.

Which currencies still work with PayPal on Steam?

According to Steam Support’s current notice, PayPal is available for Steam purchases charged in:

  • Euros (EUR)
  • Canadian dollars (CAD)
  • British pounds (GBP)
  • Japanese yen (JPY)
  • Australian dollars (AUD)
  • US dollars (USD)

This is a restriction on the currency used for a Steam purchase—not a list of countries where PayPal is banned. Your location and the currency Steam charges are not always the same thing. Steamworks documentation says that when Steam does not support a country’s native currency, it generally displays and charges prices in US dollars, except in European countries, where it uses euros. See Steamworks’ supported-currencies documentation for details. The six-currency limit applies to PayPal checkout; it does not mean Steam itself supports only six currencies.

Why is PayPal unavailable for some Steam purchases?

Valve’s Steam Support notice says PayPal told Valve in early July 2025 that its acquiring bank was immediately terminating processing for Steam-related transactions in certain currencies. Valve does not name the bank or explain its decision. The notice says Valve is “evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for the customers affected by this,” but does not announce a new method or a launch date.

Valve’s statement on restoring PayPal is: “We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future but the timeline is uncertain.” There is no announced date for a fix. Windows Central reported on the notice on August 12, 2025; the official Steam Support page is the source for Valve’s current explanation.

What to do if PayPal does not appear at checkout

  1. Check the currency Steam is charging. The relevant detail is the purchase currency shown at checkout, not just your country or the currency associated with your PayPal account.
  2. Review the methods shown for that purchase. Valve advises using another payment method currently available at checkout. Options can vary by location, so check your own checkout screen rather than assuming a particular method will be offered.
  3. Consider a Steam Wallet code if you cannot use the displayed methods. Valve lists a Wallet code as a fallback for adding funds. Check that the code is available for, and compatible with, your region and currency; it is not a guaranteed solution for every account or purchase.

Do not confuse a currency mismatch with the PayPal restriction

Steam has a separate troubleshooting issue involving currency mismatches when a customer is traveling and combines Steam Wallet funds with a payment instrument. Steam Support advises trying the payment instrument by itself, then contacting Steam Support if the purchase still fails. That guidance concerns a wallet-and-payment currency mismatch; it does not remove the PayPal restriction described above. See Steam Support’s wallet currency mismatch troubleshooting.
