The current Steam listing presents it as the next chapter of Counter-Strike, built on Source 2. Valve says CS:GO items move forward to CS2, but its listing does not say every part of the old game carried over unchanged.
Is Counter-Strike 2 free?
Yes. Valve labels Counter-Strike 2 “Free To Play” on its Steam store page and describes it as “A free upgrade to CS:GO.” The game itself is free; Prime Status is a separate paid upgrade. Its price can vary by region and change, so check the price shown in your Steam storefront.
Is CS2 a replacement for CS:GO?
Valve frames CS2 as the next chapter of Counter-Strike and a free upgrade to CS:GO—not as a separate paid sequel. Its store listing specifically says CS:GO items move forward to CS2. That is a defined continuity claim about items, not a promise that every feature, setting, or aspect of CS:GO remained unchanged.
What changed in Counter-Strike 2?
Valve says CS2 is built on Source 2 and highlights changes to presentation, gameplay systems, maps, and ranking. These are features advertised on the Steam listing, not independent performance findings.

Steam lists these minimum requirements. Meeting them is not a performance guarantee, and the listing may change.

Check the current Steam listing before installing in case requirements have changed. These are minimum specifications, not recommended settings.
Do I need Prime Status to play?
No, not for the game’s other listed modes. Steam Support says free players can access all game modes and matchmaking types except Premier, which requires Prime Status. Prime can be purchased in-game or through Steam. Valve’s store listing says Prime players are matched with other Prime players and are eligible for Prime-exclusive souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases. See Steam Support’s Prime Status FAQ for the access distinction.

Does CS2 require new hardware or accessories?
The listed PC requirements specify compatible computer hardware and storage; Valve’s store listing does not state that a new peripheral is required. It also does not establish that any particular mouse or other accessory improves results. Check your PC against the minimum requirements before installing.
