Phoenix Labs did not disclose an exact number of employees in its January 27, 2025 layoff announcement. The studio said it would part ways with “the majority of the studio,” without giving a headcount or percentage.

What Phoenix Labs announced

In a statement reproduced by Gematsu, Phoenix Labs described the decision as operational changes: “Today is another difficult day at Phoenix Labs. We have made the tough decision to part ways with the majority of the studio as part of unfortunate but necessary changes to our operations.”

The company did not name an individual speaker or explain the operational changes in more detail. It thanked affected staff and said its immediate focus was supporting them through the transition. It also said it would share more about the implications for Dauntless and Fae Farm in the coming weeks. GeekWire’s January 27, 2025 report likewise noted that no exact layoff count had been announced.

Why other headcount figures are not the layoff total

Some coverage cited an approximate company-size figure, but that is not the same as the number of people laid off. GeekWire cited LinkedIn information indicating Phoenix Labs had around 90 employees; the company did not say that 90 people were affected, nor did it publish a percentage. The January announcement’s confirmed scale is only its wording: “the majority of the studio.”

How the January cuts fit the earlier restructuring

The January 2025 announcement came after Phoenix Labs’ May 2024 restructuring, when the company announced project cancellations and said it was narrowing its focus to Dauntless and Fae Farm. PocketGamer.biz and Game Informer reported estimates of staff affected in that earlier round. Those estimates were not a company-confirmed total, and they do not establish how many people were laid off in January 2025.

What happened to Dauntless and Fae Farm afterward

The January statement did not specify immediate changes to either game; Phoenix Labs said it would provide more details later. A separate update followed on August 12, 2025: PC Gamer reported that Forte, which it described as Phoenix Labs’ parent company, said Phoenix Labs had not ceased operations. The report also said Fae Farm multiplayer support was being discontinued and described a Steam notice stating that the game would remain playable offline, with no future updates. These were later developments, not details included in the January layoff announcement.
