Paradox’s official clan pages describe six distinct combat identities, so the right choice depends on how you like to fight. Brujah suits players who want to brawl up close, Banu Haqim suits stealth, and Ventrue is the most broadly useful recommendation for players who value control and damage resistance. These are readings of the published mechanics, not results from comparative testing, and Paradox does not rank the clans by difficulty.
Six clans can be selected for Phyre at the start of the game: Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim, Ventrue, Toreador, and Lasombra. Fabien is a Malkavian detective and the second of the game’s two alternating perspectives. He is not a seventh starting-clan option.
Which clan fits your playstyle
Use this table as a first filter. The detailed profiles below list the abilities Paradox describes for each clan.
| Clan | Best fit | Core combat identity |
|---|---|---|
| Brujah | Direct, aggressive melee | Closing distance and staying in the fight |
| Banu Haqim | Stealth, stalking, assassination | Silent, sudden takedowns |
| Tremere | Ranged supernatural damage | Blood sorcery and keeping distance |
| Ventrue | Control and resilience | Suppressing or redirecting enemies while staying durable |
| Toreador | Mobility, evasion, and enthrallment | Movement and manipulating encounters |
| Lasombra | Shadow powers, fear, and isolation | Crowd disruption and shadow-themed control |
The six starting clans
Brujah: for players who want to fight up close
Brujah is the clearest match for players who want melee combat. Its post-feeding passive temporarily strengthens melee attacks. Its abilities cover the whole brawl:

#1 Best Overall
- Taunt draws enemies, or civilian prey, into attacking.
- Charge knocks enemies down.
- Lightning Strike targets multiple opponents.
- Earthshock launches nearby enemies.
Choose Brujah if you want to close distance and stay in the fight rather than manage it from afar.
Banu Haqim: for stealth-first players
Banu Haqim centers on stealth and assassination. After feeding, the player’s actions become silent for a period. Its abilities include silencing a target, extreme speed, a mortal beheading strike, and temporary invisibility.
Paradox’s official page warns that invisibility alone does not prevent sound. The silence comes from the feeding passive, and the invisibility ability does not make you quiet on its own. Plan stealth routes around that distinction.
Tremere: for ranged blood sorcery
Tremere is built around supernatural damage at range. According to the official page, Tremere controls both its own blood and that of its enemies, keeps distance from threats, boils blood, and forms blood projectiles. Named abilities include Cauldron of Blood, Blood Curse, Blood Salvo, and Recall, which marks a location to return to.

Rank #2
Ventrue: for control and resilience
Ventrue combines enemy control with a defensive passive. Feeding hardens the skin and increases resistance to damage, and the clan’s perk restores more health from feeding. Its abilities can relax a target, possess and command an opponent, issue a lethal command, or subdue enemies in the player’s gaze.
This is the most reasonable comfort recommendation for players who want to suppress or redirect enemies while absorbing more punishment. It is a playstyle match, not a claim that Ventrue is the easiest clan.
Toreador: for mobility and manipulation
Feeding increases Toreador’s movement speed. The clan can entrance a target into fighting for an ally, dash to a targeted location, lure a target, and temporarily boost reflexes to evade damage.
Toreador suits players who value movement and like shaping how an encounter unfolds.
Lasombra: for shadow control and fear
Feeding makes the player harder to see for a period. Lasombra abilities trap opponents with shadow, let the player move between shadows, frighten a target into fleeing, and create a temporary shadow dimension.
Rank #3
- Blood sustains you and empowers your vampiric Disciplines. You’ll stalk and feed on the city’s population at night. Use your supernatural powers or raw persuasion on unsuspecting mortals to lure them into dark alleys and slake your Hunger.
- Enter the World of Darkness and rise through vampire society or rail against it. Experience Seattle - a city full of alluring, dangerous characters and factions, not to mention the mortals at stake in the clash of powers beyond their knowing.
- Hunt your way through a modern-night Seattle on the brink of an open supernatural war in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, where visceral vampire action meets a neo-noir murder mystery. Navigate the vampire Court of Seattle and its dark underbelly in this action RPG, realized by the BAFTA award-winning studio The Chinese Room.
Choose Lasombra if you want supernatural crowd disruption and shadow-themed abilities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does your starting clan lock you in?
No. Official clan pages say you begin in the selected clan’s ability tree and earn Ability Points through missions, combat, and exploration. Xbox Wire’s October 14, 2025 coverage describes mixing abilities across the game’s clans. Your first clan therefore sets the initial progression path, but it does not limit you to that clan’s abilities for the whole game. Treat the choice as a direction, not a permanent commitment.
Are Toreador and Lasombra in the base game?
Yes. Paradox’s official game overview places both clans in the base game. Earlier pre-release talk of paid clan DLC is superseded by the publisher’s position. Marco Behrmann, White Wolf Executive Vice President and Bloodlines 2 Executive Producer, said: “Thanks to our community for the frank feedback on Bloodlines 2 and the Premium Edition. That feedback made it clear: Lasombra and Toreador belong in the base game, so that is what we are doing.” You do not need to buy an edition or clan pack to play either clan.
Which clan should a beginner pick?
For most first-time players, Ventrue offers the widest margin for error, because its control tools and damage-resistance passive help in mixed encounters. Brujah is the better choice if you already enjoy direct melee games and want immediate, readable combat. Neither recommendation is based on a measured difficulty ranking, and Paradox has not published one.
Game context for starting a new run
- Bloodlines 2 is an action RPG released on October 21, 2025, for Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games Store, and GOG, according to Paradox’s FAQ.
- The story alternates between two perspectives: Elder vampire Phyre and Malkavian detective Fabien.
- Paradox states that the game features a dozen different endings shaped by player choices. This is the publisher’s own count; it has not been independently verified.
- Paradox’s overview lists two 2026 story packs: Loose Cannon, centered on Brujah Sheriff Benny, and The Flower & The Flame, centered on Toreador Primogen Ysabella. These are story content, not playable starting clans. Confirm release dates on the official store page, since they are time-sensitive.
The launch announcement, which also covers the difficulty modes, is available on Paradox Interactive’s Cision release page.
