The card is listed as legacy hardware by AMD, but the available official sources do not establish that it causes this game’s crashes or provide a confirmed Cars 2-specific fix. Start by checking the game’s requirements and the exact Windows and driver versions, then note when the failure happens and whether audio continues.
Does the Radeon HD 6670 meet Cars 2’s graphics requirement?
Steam lists the game’s minimum graphics requirement as a dedicated 256 MB DirectX 9.0c-compatible card comparable to an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon X800, with Shader Model 3 support. AMD lists the HD 6670 as supporting DirectX 11 and offering up to 1 GB of GPU memory. Those specifications are useful context, but they do not diagnose a black screen or prove that the rest of a particular PC meets the game’s requirements.
Steam’s published minimum system requirements are:
- Operating system: Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7.
- Processor: Intel Pentium 4 at 3.0 GHz, AMD Athlon 64 3500+, or equivalent.
- Memory: 2 GB RAM.
- Graphics: A dedicated 256 MB DirectX 9.0c-compatible graphics card, comparable to a GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon X800, with Shader Model 3 support.
- Storage: 3 GB free disk space.
These are the game’s published minimums, not a guarantee that the game will launch or run correctly on every system that meets them. Steam separately says its client has required Windows 10 or newer since January 1, 2024. That is a Steam-client requirement; it does not change the older Windows XP SP3/Windows 7 minimum operating-system listing for the game.

What AMD says about HD 6670 drivers
AMD says Radeon HD 6000-series products have Windows 10 and DirectX 11 driver support and recommends installing the latest AMD Catalyst driver for Windows 10. However, AMD’s HD 6670 product page classifies the card as a legacy-support product and says no additional driver releases are planned. The page lists historical driver packages by Windows version and system architecture, so check both before downloading anything.
For Windows 10, AMD’s HD 6670 page lists Catalyst 15.7.1 WHQL (released July 29, 2015) and Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Beta (released March 1, 2016) for 32-bit systems, and Catalyst 14.4 (released April 25, 2014) for 64-bit systems. These are the packages listed on AMD’s page, not universal recommendations or confirmed Cars 2 fixes. Use AMD’s Radeon HD 6670 driver page to check the listing that matches your OS and architecture. How to narrow down the black screen or crash
- Record the failure pattern. Note whether the screen goes black at launch, when entering a race, or after playing for a while. Check whether game audio continues and whether the monitor reports that it has lost the signal. These details can help distinguish possible game, driver, display-path, or hardware problems, but no specific diagnosis follows from the symptom alone.
- Check the system against Steam’s requirements. Confirm the processor, memory, free disk space, operating system, and graphics support against the Cars 2 Steam page. Keep the game’s published OS minimum separate from Steam’s newer client requirement.
- Verify the installed driver against AMD’s listing. Record the Windows edition and whether it is 32- or 64-bit, then compare those details with the options on AMD’s HD 6670 page. Avoid assuming that an unlisted modern package or a third-party driver download is suitable for this legacy card.
- Collect details before seeking support. Have the game version, Windows version and architecture, AMD driver version, and the exact failure pattern ready. If the problem continues, those details are more useful to game or hardware support than the description “black screen” alone.
The official sources cited here do not document a confirmed Cars 2-specific fix for the HD 6670. They also do not show that replacing the card is necessary.

Do not treat a black screen by itself as proof that the HD 6670 has failed. A replacement becomes relevant only if diagnosis independently points to a hardware fault or if the PC does not meet a needed compatibility requirement. If you do consider an upgrade, check that the new card fits the motherboard slot, that the power supply can support it, and that the display connections are compatible; AMD identifies these as factors to consider when upgrading graphics hardware.
