Meta confirmed on January 13, 2026, that it would close three VR game studios: Armature Studio, Sanzaru Games and Twisted Pixel. Their best-known work includes the Resident Evil 4 VR port, the Asgard’s Wrath games and Marvel’s Deadpool VR. Meta said the move was part of shifting investment from the metaverse toward wearables; it later said it intended to keep investing in VR, with a stronger emphasis on third-party developers.
Which studios did Meta shut down?
Meta confirmed the closures to Gematsu on January 13, 2026. The three studios and representative games are:

These are representative credits, not a complete list of each studio’s work. Gematsu also reported that Meta acquired Twisted Pixel and Armature in October 2022, and Sanzaru in February 2020; those are acquisition dates, not founding dates. Gematsu’s report attributes the closure confirmation and Meta’s rationale to a company spokesperson.
Why did Meta say it was closing the studios?
A Meta spokesperson told Gematsu that the company was shifting some investment “from Metaverse toward Wearables” and planned to reinvest the savings to support wearables growth that year. That is Meta’s stated explanation; it does not specify how much money would be redirected or how the change would affect individual games and projects.

Does this mean Meta is leaving VR?
Meta’s later public statements said it intended to remain in VR while changing how it invests and develops content. In February 2026, Meta VP of Content Samantha Ryan described “right-sizing” Reality Labs investment, said Meta planned to stay in VR over the long term, and pointed to a stronger focus on third-party developers and separating VR from Worlds as business platforms. Ryan’s February statement describes the company’s position, not a guarantee of particular releases or investment levels.
In a March 2026 developer post, Meta acknowledged that it had shuttered first-party studios and described the broader VR industry as challenging. The post said that “success within our segment requires ongoing, sustained investment.” Meta’s developer update frames continued VR investment as necessary for the segment’s growth; it does not establish that third-party projects will replace the closed studios’ output.

What is known—and not known—about the impact?
The closures establish a change in Meta’s internal studio lineup, not the end of VR development at the company. Its stated direction favors a greater role for outside developers while it continues to describe investment in VR. That is a strategic distinction, not evidence of a specific future release slate.
