Virtualmente dimenticato: il Virtual Boy di Nintendo, 31 anni dopo

Uscito in Giappone nel 1995, il Virtual Boy fu una console stereoscopica da tavolo con immagini rosse su nero. Ecco la sua storia e il ritorno su Switch nel 2026.

Il Virtual Boy, la console da tavolo stereoscopica di Nintendo, debuttò in Giappone il 21 luglio 1995: al 2026 sono passati 31 anni, non 25. La macchina mostrava immagini rosse su sfondo nero e ebbe una vita commerciale breve. Nel 2026 Nintendo ne ha annunciato il ritorno su Switch e Switch 2, con accessori dedicati e requisiti di accesso specifici.

Che cos’era il Virtual Boy

Nintendo presentò il Virtual Boy nel 1994 come un sistema di «Virtual Immersion» a 32 bit. Era una console autonoma da tavolo, montata su un supporto: non si collegava a un televisore e non era un visore indossabile. L’annuncio dell’epoca descriveva due display LED a scansione tramite specchi, audio stereofonico, un controller a doppia impugnatura e alimentazione con sei batterie AA. Sono caratteristiche dichiarate da Nintendo nel 1994, non misurazioni moderne.

La tecnologia del display derivava da una matrice lineare a scansione sviluppata da Reflection Technology: una colonna di LED e uno specchio in rapido movimento componevano l’immagine. Il risultato era un effetto stereoscopico, ma la palette restava rossa e nera: il Virtual Boy non offriva 3D a colori. Il progetto era inizialmente orientato a un dispositivo indossabile; la forma definitiva da tavolo, su supporto, rinunciò alla mobilità prevista. (Ars Technica, 15 maggio 2024)

Uscita e breve vita commerciale

La cronologia varia a seconda del mercato e della fase dell’annuncio. Il Virtual Boy uscì in Giappone il 21 luglio 1995. All’E3 Nintendo annunciò il 14 agosto come data prevista per il lancio statunitense; la ricostruzione storica di Ars Technica indica invece il 21 agosto come data di uscita negli Stati Uniti. Sono quindi una data programmata e una data di rilascio riportata successivamente, non due versioni equivalenti dello stesso annuncio.

La stessa ricostruzione stima circa 770.000 unità vendute nel mondo: 140.000 in Giappone e 630.000 in Nord America. Nintendo terminò le vendite giapponesi nel dicembre 1995, mentre in Nord America proseguirono nel 1996. Il totale è una stima storica, non un dato ufficiale certificato da Nintendo. Nel 1994 l’azienda aveva previsto tre milioni di console e 14 milioni di giochi in Giappone entro marzo 1996: erano obiettivi previsionali, non vendite effettive. Perché è stato dimenticato?

La breve permanenza sul mercato, le vendite contenute secondo la stima disponibile e la limitata eredità commerciale aiutano a spiegare perché il Virtual Boy sia rimasto una curiosità nella storia Nintendo, più che una piattaforma duratura. La ricostruzione di Ars Technica discute anche i compromessi dello sviluppo e la mancanza di una solida prospettiva di giochi in arrivo. Non emerge però una singola spiegazione ufficiale di Nintendo che attribuisca l’esito a un solo difetto: è più corretto leggerlo come il risultato di più fattori, non come una causa unica dimostrata.

Il ritorno su Switch e Switch 2

Nintendo ha annunciato Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics per Switch e Switch 2, con lancio il 17 febbraio 2026. L’annuncio limita la disponibilità della raccolta a Stati Uniti e Canada. Per accedervi servono un abbonamento Nintendo Switch Online + Pacchetto aggiuntivo e uno degli accessori di visualizzazione dedicati: la sola iscrizione non basta.
