Void Shadows is the first major story expansion for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. It adds a campaign storyline aboard the von Valancius voidship, a Genestealer Cult threat, new companion Kibellah, quests, equipment, lore, crew members, and ship locations. It is integrated into the main campaign and requires the base game.
What Void Shadows adds
The expansion puts the Lord Captain’s dynasty under threat from within its own voidship. The official Xbox product description identifies the enemy as a Genestealer Cult infiltrating the ship and converting members of its crew.

Alongside that story, the listing describes new quests, unique equipment, additional lore, new crew members, and previously unexplored locations aboard the ship. The storyline is integrated into the main campaign rather than presented as a separate standalone game.
Who is Kibellah?
Kibellah is the expansion’s new companion. Owlcat describes her as a skilled Death Cult Assassin, and the store description says she may develop a personal bond with the Lord Captain. Those descriptions establish her broad role, but do not specify recruitment conditions, romance steps, or quest outcomes.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Rulebook focuses on the Gilead System, allowing you to tell your own stories in a society beset by daemonic invasion and internal corruption
- Character Creation has been streamlined, with a focus on Frameworks. With so many choices of who and what you can play, you’ll want to decide the focus of your game early
- The Factions Chapter is a primer on life in the 41st Millennium, detailing each of the organisations vying for supremacy in the Warp-torn Gilead System

How long is Void Shadows?
The Xbox product description and Steam listing advertise about 15 hours of gameplay. Treat that as a publisher/store estimate, not a guaranteed duration or independently measured playtime. Your actual time will depend on how you play.
Release date and platform availability
Owlcat Games released Void Shadows on September 24, 2024, stating in its release announcement that the DLC had arrived in stores. The same announcement links to Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, PlayStation, and Xbox storefronts.
Owlcat’s May 23, 2024 announcement had originally scheduled the expansion for August 8, 2024; the later September date is the actual release date. A Nintendo UK product page lists a Nintendo Switch 2 version with a regional release date of July 7, 2026. That listing is specific to the UK page and does not establish availability or a release date in every region.

Does Void Shadows require Rogue Trader?
Yes. The Xbox listing says the expansion requires Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, sold separately. Check that you are viewing the DLC for your platform and region, and that you own the matching base game; the DLC is not the base game itself.

The official descriptions explain the premise and broad content, but do not establish the precise quest sequence, when Kibellah can be recruited, whether content is missable, or how far into an existing save the player must be to access it. The listings also do not provide a stable current price; check your platform’s store for regional availability and pricing.
