Virtuos’s Unannounced Unreal Engine 5 “Remake” Was Oblivion Remastered

A January 2025 report flagged an unannounced Virtuos UE5 remake. Bethesda later confirmed it was Oblivion Remastered, a remaster, and updated the platform and edition details.

The unannounced Virtuos project reported in January 2025 was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Bethesda Game Studios developed it and credited Virtuos as a development partner. Bethesda’s own term for the game is a remaster, not a remake, and the distinction changes how the project should be understood.

What the January 2025 reports actually said

On January 7, 2025, VGC and Insider Gaming both reported that the LinkedIn profile of Oleksii Moskovchenko, Virtuos technical art director, described an “unannounced UE5 PS5/XSX/PC remake.” That wording was the entire official-looking basis for the story. Neither outlet had a project announcement from Virtuos, Bethesda, or any publisher to point to.

Both reports connected the profile wording to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion only as a possibility, drawn from earlier rumors. VGC recounted older speculation, including an unverified Reddit claim about a dual-engine “pairing system” and a mention of a leaked Bethesda roadmap. Those claims were never confirmed and should be read as rumor, not as production facts. Insider Gaming also discussed previous leaks and speculation, and treated Oblivion as a theory rather than a identification.

What Bethesda later confirmed

Bethesda’s official launch overview, published April 22, 2025, confirmed the project as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. It describes the title as the product of a collaboration between Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos. The statement from Bethesda Game Studios, not attributed to any named individual, reads: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.”

How the engine fits in

The January reporting framed Unreal Engine 5 as the foundation of a new version of the game. Bethesda describes a narrower role. According to its April 2025 overview, UE5 is the source of significant visual and performance enhancements, while the original Oblivion code still sits underneath the experience and powers gameplay and world logic. Bethesda lists remade character and world assets, new lighting, improved lip synchronization, sprinting, and recreated combat animation as part of the upgrade. These are Bethesda’s own descriptions of its work; they have not been independently tested.

Treat the April list as the launch-era platform set and the Switch 2 release as a later addition, not part of the original launch.

What remains unverified

Several claims from the early speculation never received confirmation. The dual-engine “pairing system” from the Reddit post, the leaked Bethesda roadmap, and the 9.5 million copies sold figure that Insider Gaming attributed to EEDAR are all unconfirmed. The original EEDAR publication could not be traced, so that sales figure should not be cited as an authoritative number.

Oblivion Remastered is a remaster of an existing game with UE5 presentation layered over Bethesda’s original systems. The “unannounced remake” story was an accurate lead on the team involved, but the framing was wrong.
