Viper is the boss at the end of the Forgotten Temple main mission in The First Berserker: Khazan. The key is to wait for his attacks to begin before defending: Brink Guard his phase-one spear strings, then in phase two Brink Guard the fast dagger and Brink Dodge the slower fist. During the arena-darkening sequence, track his glowing eyes and dodge or Brink Guard when lightning signals a lunge.
How the Viper fight works
Viper is a dragonkin who changes weapons and attack patterns as the fight progresses. Phase one centers on his dual-bladed spear. In phase two, he uses a large fist and a dagger, then briefly darkens the arena and attacks from its edges. His irregular timing makes reacting to the start of an attack more useful than defending as soon as you see him move. GamesFuze’s guide recommends patience to learn those timings (GamesFuze’s Viper guide).

Phase one: read the spear cues
Brink Guards can reduce Viper’s stamina, but mistiming a defense can leave you exposed. Wait for the attack to commit rather than blocking or dodging at the first hint of movement. When Viper begins a twirling combo, moving left while staying close may make many of the rotations miss, according to GamesFuze.

Phase two: defend according to the weapon
Viper now pairs slower attacks from a large fist with faster dagger strikes. Treat them as different problems instead of relying on one defense for everything.

- Fast dagger strikes: Brink Guard them to defend and pressure Viper’s stamina.
- Slow fist attacks: Brink Dodge them. A successful dodge often gives you an opening to punish.
- Palm strike to the ground: Expect a rock throw and be ready to dodge after the palm hits.
Survive the darkness sequence
When the arena darkens, Viper moves around its edge and lunges intermittently. Follow the glowing trail of his eyes to locate him, then watch for a lightning flash: it signals an incoming lunge. Dodge for the safer response, or use a Brink Guard if you want to create a small opening. He eventually returns to the center for a lightning slam followed by a circular slash. Keep guarding or dodging until the darkness clears rather than rushing in during the sequence.

No particular weapon or build is established as necessary for this fight. PowerPyx describes the game’s three weapon categories in general terms: dual wielding emphasizes damage and dodging, the greatsword emphasizes charged attacks and Brink Guarding, and the spear emphasizes stamina damage with a mix of Brink Guarding and dodging. PowerPyx favors the spear in its general recommendations, but that is not evidence that it is superior specifically against Viper (PowerPyx’s boss guide).

A Steam Community post recommends choosing guard or dodge based on your playstyle, investing in stamina efficiency for that defense, and managing stamina carefully. It also suggests taking short punish windows and adapting as Viper changes phases. These are player-reported tips, not official mechanics documentation or independently tested findings (Steam Community discussion: “Helpful Tips to Fight Viper”).
In practice, favor the defense you can time consistently and avoid spending stamina on unnecessary blocks—especially against the thrown weapon. Punish briefly after a successful defense, then return your attention to Viper’s next cue instead of extending an attack while he is recovering.
