In the original Quake III Arena OpenGL renderer, enter r_swapInterval 0 in the console to request VSync off. If the change does not take effect, restart the video system or game; if you are using a different renderer, check its own setting instead.
Turn VSync off in the original Quake III Arena renderer
- Open the in-game console and enter
r_swapInterval 0. The original renderer registersr_swapIntervalwith a default value of0and marks it archived and latched in the Quake III Arena source. - If the command does not apply immediately, enter
vid_restartor restart the game. Because the variable is latched, a video or game restart may be needed for the renderer to pick up the change. - To make the setting persistent, add
seta r_swapInterval "0"to the active configuration file. Back up the file before editing it. A Steam Community discussion identifiesq3config.cfgas a configuration recovery point.
The value-to-meaning mapping is practical community guidance: in that 2019 Steam discussion, a respondent described 1 as VSync on and 0 as off. This is not a guarantee that every Quake III build or renderer handles the same variable.

Check your configuration file location
Paths differ by operating system and engine. The ioquake3 README lists these configuration locations for ioquake3:
| Operating system | ioquake3 configuration location |
|---|---|
| Windows | %AppData%Quake3 |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Quake3 |
| Linux | ~/.config/Quake3 |
These are ioquake3 conventions, not universal paths for every commercial release or fork. On Linux, the README distinguishes configuration from data and internal-state directories. A custom fs_homepath can also change where files are stored; the original release used /home/.q3a.

Identify the renderer
Do not assume all Quake III derivatives use r_swapInterval. For example, the Kenny Edition Vulkan fork documents a separate r_vsync cvar and says a video restart is required after changing it. Use the control documented for the renderer you actually run.
Check driver-level synchronization
Graphics-driver settings can affect the result seen in game. If the in-game change does not match what you observe, check the driver’s synchronization configuration as well as the active renderer and its cvar.

Choose based on what you want to change
VSync and frame-rate limits are separate controls. VSync concerns synchronization with display refresh; com_maxfps is a distinct frame-rate setting mentioned alongside r_swapinterval in the Steam discussion. Community reports also describe movement behavior changing with frame rate, but that is not a universal recommendation about an ideal cap.
- If you want to avoid visible tearing, compare the result with synchronization enabled and disabled on your own system.
- If responsiveness is your priority, evaluate how the controls feel in your own setup rather than assuming a specific latency improvement.
- Observe frame-rate behavior separately from tearing and responsiveness; changing VSync does not establish a particular FPS result.
The cited source code establishes the original renderer’s cvar and default, while the 2019 community post supplies the on/off interpretation. Neither establishes a universal measured change in latency, image quality, or performance across hardware.
