WWE 2K23 online matches cannot be played anymore. 2K discontinued the game’s servers on January 6, 2025, so every online mode is inaccessible, and no change on your side, such as a router reset, cache clear, reinstall, or new hardware, will bring them back. If you already own the game, you can still play its offline modes. Some owners who see crashes around online play are really running into the shutdown, and the sections below explain how to tell the difference.
What the server shutdown means for online matches
According to WWE 2K Support’s notice “WWE 2K23: Server Sunset,” published February 25, 2025, the game’s servers were discontinued on January 6, 2025. The notice says: “You will no longer be able to access any online game mode after this point, however if you already own the game you will be able to continue to play offline modes.” Online functions that stopped with the servers include online matches and Community Creations.

The sales timeline came earlier. According to the same 2K notice, WWE 2K23, along with its VC, DLC, and add-ons, stopped being available for purchase on November 1, 2024. A reader who is trying to buy the game in order to play online will not be able to complete that plan through 2K’s storefronts.
Why the crash looks like a matchmaking problem
When an online service is retired, the game still launches and still shows online menus. Attempts to enter a match then fail, freeze, or close the game. That can look like a crash, but the root cause is a server that no longer responds, not a fault on your console or PC that a local fix can repair.

There are two separate situations to keep apart:
- Online match access: Not possible on any platform since the January 6, 2025 shutdown. No local fix restores it.
- Offline crash: A separate problem in a single-player or local mode. This one can be diagnosed, and it is covered in the troubleshooting steps below.
Offline modes that remain for existing owners
2K’s current service table names the following modes as continuing to work offline for owners who already have the game:
- Play Now
- Showcase
- MyRISE
- MyGM
- Universe
Only those modes are listed in the service table. If a mode is not on this list, check the in-game menus or the WWE 2K Support pages before assuming it works.

If an offline mode crashes
Crashes in offline modes are a separate question, and 2K’s general support hub is the right place to send them. It covers console crash codes, cache clearing, PC troubleshooting, PC and console network troubleshooting, bug reports, and support tickets. None of these resources reverses the WWE 2K23 server sunset, and none is documented by 2K as a confirmed fix for this game’s offline crashes, so treat each suggestion as a test rather than a promise.
- Confirm that the crash happens only in offline modes. If it also happens when you start the game with no online activity, that still points to an offline problem, but write that down.
- Note your platform (PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, or Nintendo Switch) and the exact error code shown, if any.
- Record when the crash happens, for example during a specific mode, after a set number of minutes, or when loading a particular screen.
- Open a ticket through WWE 2K Support with those details, and add whether the game was installed fresh or carried over from an earlier installation.
WWE 2K26 as a newer option for online play
Readers who want online matches should know that 2K lists WWE 2K26 as a newer series entry. Its online services are scheduled through March 31, 2028 on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2. These are scheduled dates, and 2K can change them, so check the current service information before buying.

If you are deciding between keeping WWE 2K23 for offline play and moving to WWE 2K26 for online matches, check the scheduled online horizon, your platform, and whether the offline modes you care about are enough on their own.

Nothing in the shutdown notice or the 2K service information says that WWE 2K26 restores WWE 2K23 online matches, saved online progress, or Community Creations. Treat WWE 2K26 as a separate purchase, not a repair.

The official notices settle two things: online access to WWE 2K23 ended on January 6, 2025, and offline modes remain available to existing owners. They do not explain the cause of any individual player’s earlier crashes, and they do not establish a universal fix for crashes in offline modes. If you contact support about an offline crash, the platform name and the error code are the details that matter most.
