Its strongest case is the breadth of rallies and progression; its main caveats are a steep learning curve and, for returning WRC 8 players, changes one reviewer considered incremental. The game was developed by KT Racing and published by Nacon.
What does WRC 9 include?
Nacon’s current product page, accessed in 2026, lists 100 special stages, more than 15 historical cars, and three new rallies: Kenya, Japan, and New Zealand. These are publisher-stated content figures. Nacon’s March 19, 2020 announcement also described more than 50 official teams and over 15 bonus cars.

In that 2020 announcement, Nacon characterized the new events as the return of Kenya’s Safari Rally, Japan’s narrow asphalt roads, and New Zealand’s scenery, alongside redesigned environments for two other rallies. These are the publisher’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of the stages.
Career progression is another central part of the package: the game is built around advancing through rally competition rather than only selecting a car for a quick race. For online play, Nacon and Steam describe Clubs, where players can create championships and compete. Online services can change over time, so check that Clubs are currently available on your platform before buying specifically for that feature.

Is WRC 9 difficult to learn?
Nintendo Life’s review of the Switch version describes the handling as sensitive and difficult to pick up. The reviewer recommends learning the stages as well as the car, since knowing the route is part of managing a rally rather than simply reacting to each corner.
Nintendo Life also points to the Junior class as a more forgiving place for newcomers to begin, giving them time to learn the game’s demands before progressing. That is one outlet’s assessment of the Switch release; how challenging the controls feel will vary with platform, settings, and player experience.

How does WRC 9 compare with WRC 8?
For players upgrading from WRC 8, the main question is whether the added content and continued refinements justify returning. MeriStation’s Xbox One review, published September 18, 2020, judged WRC 9 highly continuous with its predecessor, while also acknowledging additions and ongoing improvement. That is one reviewer’s view, not a universal consensus.
The practical distinction is therefore more about what you value than a promise of a wholly different game: the new rally content and ongoing career may appeal if you want another season to play, while the reported continuity may make the upgrade less compelling if you already have WRC 8 and want a major change in feel or structure.

Can you play WRC 9 with a controller, or do you need a wheel?
A wheel is not a requirement. MeriStation said the Xbox One game worked well with a pad and that the strongest sensations came from a wheel. Treat a wheel as an optional preference for a more involved control setup, not as a prerequisite for playing. If you are considering a specific wheel, verify its compatibility with your platform and edition separately.
Which platform should you choose?
The best version depends on where you want to play and which modes matter to you. Nintendo lists the Switch release date as March 11, 2021, with TV, tabletop, and handheld modes and online play for one to eight players. Those are Nintendo’s listed capabilities; online play depends on the service and features being available when you use them.

Who should buy WRC 9?
- Consider it if you want licensed rally content, a career built around progression, and are prepared to practice the handling.
- It may not be the best fit if you want an immediately forgiving driving game or, as a WRC 8 owner, are expecting a dramatic change based on the continuity noted by MeriStation.
- Before paying, check the current platform edition, regional listing, price, and whether online Clubs or other online features you care about are operating.
For Switch players, the choice also comes down to whether handheld and TV/tabletop play suit your routine. For PC players, compare the listing’s current requirements with your hardware. On any platform, try the Junior class first if the controls feel demanding, and choose a wheel only if it matches your preferred way to play.
