Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere isn’t one established cause behind every World of Warcraft crash on PC. First identify whether WoW exits, freezes, disconnects, or causes Windows to lock up or restart; then match the troubleshooting steps to that symptom. Blizzard’s current system requirements page covers the current game, not a Dragonflight-only build, and its published minimums are a baseline—not a guarantee against crashes.
First identify what “crashing” means
Before changing settings, note the exact error text or code, when the problem occurs, and what changed shortly before it began. A crash at launch, after login, on one character, or during a particular activity can point to different troubleshooting paths; those details alone do not establish a cause.
- WoW closes to desktop or shows an exception: record the error and test drivers, add-ons, background applications, and game files.
- The game freezes but Windows remains usable: note whether audio continues and whether you can return to the desktop.
- You are disconnected or stuck retrieving the realm list: this is different from a game process exiting. Blizzard describes BLZ51901016 as a disconnection/retrieving-realm-list issue and says it may involve system requirements or a connection problem. See Blizzard’s BLZ51901016 guidance.
- Windows itself freezes or reboots: treat this as a system-wide failure, not simply a WoW crash. The symptom alone does not identify whether hardware, a driver, heat, or power is responsible.
Also write down whether Windows, WoW, a graphics driver, an add-on, or hardware was updated or changed just before the first failure.
Check the current PC requirements
Blizzard’s World of Warcraft system requirements, checked on October 8, 2026, list these minimum Windows specifications for the current game:

| Requirement | Published Windows minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit, May 2019 Update or newer |
| Processor | Six-core CPU with a 4.0 GHz boost |
| Graphics | DirectX 12-capable GPU with 4 GB |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM |
| Storage | SSD with 128 GB available space |
These are current-game requirements, not a Dragonflight-specific specification, and Blizzard notes that requirements can change as the game changes. Meeting them does not prove that a component is healthy or that a crash will not occur. If your PC falls short, address the measured gap; do not buy RAM, a graphics card, or an SSD as a generic crash fix. An SSD is relevant here only if the machine does not meet the published SSD and available-space requirement.
Try low-risk fixes in a controlled order
Change one thing at a time and record whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to tell which test helped, if any, and avoids turning a useful diagnosis into a pile of simultaneous changes.

- Update Windows and the graphics driver. Install updates from Windows Update and the official support channel for your GPU. Blizzard recommends operating-system and driver updates in its access-violation troubleshooting and BLZ51901016 troubleshooting. A newer driver is a reasonable compatibility test, not a guaranteed fix; driver-specific regressions can occur.
- Test with add-ons disabled and the UI reset. Back up custom interface and add-on settings first. Blizzard recommends resetting the UI for BLZ51901016 and memory-error troubleshooting; add-ons or interface files may be corrupted or use excessive memory. Treat a reset as a diagnostic test, not proof that add-ons caused your crash.
- Close other applications temporarily. Blizzard includes this step in its guidance for connection issues, access violations, and memory errors. If WoW works after you close background software, reopen applications selectively to find a possible conflict rather than assuming which one was responsible.
- Restart the PC and check memory or storage warnings. If WoW displays a memory error, follow Blizzard’s advice to restart, compare your system with the requirements, close other apps, reset the UI, and check free storage. Blizzard explains that its “Not Enough Memory” error means the computer has run out of space for new information in memory; that message does not show that every unexplained crash requires more RAM. See Blizzard’s memory-error steps.
- Scan and repair the installation when file damage is plausible. For an access violation or other file-related symptom, use the Battle.net app’s Scan and Repair workflow before reinstalling. Blizzard notes that a bad file can cause an access violation and includes repair or reinstall steps in its access-violation guidance. Reinstalling is a later step, not the first test.
Use the error type to choose the next step
If WoW shows an access violation
Start with Windows and graphics-driver updates, close background applications, and check for a damaged game file with Scan and Repair. Blizzard’s access-violation guidance covers these possibilities, but the error does not by itself identify which one applies to your PC. If the problem continues, keep the exact exception text for support.
If WoW shows a memory error
Restart, close other applications, reset the UI, and check available storage and the published system requirements. These steps follow Blizzard’s guidance for that error. Do not infer from an unrelated crash—or from the memory message alone—that buying RAM is necessarily the answer.

If you see BLZ51901016
Because Blizzard describes this as a disconnection or realm-list issue, check your connection and network devices as well as compatibility and UI-related steps. A network test is appropriate for a disconnection; replacing a router is not a general remedy for WoW simply closing to desktop.

If the problem persists after targeted tests, give Blizzard support the exact error, PC specifications, Windows and graphics-driver versions, when the failure occurs, recent changes, and which tests changed the result. If the entire PC freezes or restarts, make that clear: it is materially different from a game-only crash, and the symptoms alone do not establish a component failure.
