But that does not mean every shopper will pay more by waiting. Retail discounts, region, model, stock and whether you consider refurbished or previously played consoles can change the checkout price.
What changed, and when?
The announcements below cover manufacturer suggested or recommended prices, not live retailer prices. Check the price at checkout for the exact model and country you intend to buy.

Does waiting mean you will pay more?
Not necessarily. These announcements show that official recommended prices can rise, but they do not establish that every retailer has raised prices or that a delayed purchase will cost a particular shopper more. A sale, clearance offer, local pricing, stock levels or choosing a different model can offset or exceed the change in MSRP. There is no independent study cited here measuring how often waiting makes console purchases more expensive, so these manufacturer announcements should not be treated as a universal trend statistic.
How to decide whether to buy now or wait
- Identify your country and exact model. Recommended prices differ by market and console configuration; do not compare a price for one model or region with another.
- Check the effective date. For a price change that has already taken effect, compare the current price with current retailer offers. Before a future effective date, an available lower price may be worth considering, but it is not a guarantee of savings.
- Compare checkout prices, not just MSRP. Check the retailer’s current price and stock for the precise console. Taxes, bundles and retailer promotions can affect what you actually pay.
- Decide whether refurbished or previously played hardware is acceptable. Xbox says certified refurbished consoles are available through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP and that it is working with retail partners on lower-priced previously played consoles. Those are possible alternatives, not a guarantee of stock in every market. Review the seller’s warranty, return policy and condition description.
- Weigh the cost of waiting against what you want to play. If the console and its games or features matter to you now, the value of using it sooner is part of the decision; if not, waiting for a retailer offer may suit you better. No future console launch date, price or shortage is established by these announcements.
Why manufacturers say prices are rising
The companies have described broader cost pressures, but their explanations are company statements rather than independent forecasts. Nintendo cited “various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term” for the Switch 2 U.S. MSRP revision. Sony’s Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing, said the company acted “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

Xbox said console storage and memory prices had increased by more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. That is Xbox’s own account and forward-looking expectation, not an independently established market-wide statistic. Team Xbox also said consoles are “typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make.”
