If your War Thunder friends list is empty or friends have vanished, wait before repeatedly removing and re-adding people. Gaijin has previously fixed a bug that emptied the list, and staff acknowledged another friends-list issue in November 2024. Those are historical reports, not confirmation of a current outage or a universal fix. If the problem persists or seems limited to your account, contact Gaijin Support.
Why can friends disappear from the War Thunder list?
A missing list can be caused by a game or service problem, but the symptoms alone do not establish the cause. Gaijin’s update 2.35.0.35 changelog, published 19 March 2024, records a specific bug that emptied the friends list and prevented joining a battle after changing accounts; the changelog says that bug was fixed. That historical fix does not show that every later empty list has the same cause.
In a separate official forum thread titled “Friends being unadded,” posted 5 November 2024, Gaijin staff member Stona_WT acknowledged the report at the time: “Hi Sorry for troubles, we are aware of the issue. It should be solved soon™”. This was a response to that report, not a current status update. The available evidence does not confirm a live outage or a current universal fix.
What should you try first?
- Give the list time to recover. Community reports describe friends lists later reappearing, sometimes alongside server glitches or updates. Waiting is a cautious first step because repeated list changes may not help during a temporary problem.
- Consider a refresh only if you are comfortable doing so. Players have suggested re-adding a friend to refresh the list, or waiting for friends to join. These are anecdotal suggestions, not verified or guaranteed fixes; avoid making repeated changes based on them.
- Check whether the issue persists. If the list remains empty or particular friends stay missing, contact Gaijin Support rather than assuming an old bug report explains your case. An official forum response directed a player with this problem to Support, but did not promise a resolution time.
What to include in a Gaijin Support request
Use Gaijin’s current Support portal for a persistent or account-specific issue. To make your report easier to assess, describe when the problem began, the platform you play on, and whether other game or social features are affected. These are practical details to provide, not a published list of official requirements.

Does playing through Steam cause the problem?
The available evidence does not establish that Steam causes friends to disappear. A separate Gaijin Support article says wishlist gifting is available through the War Thunder launcher and not the Steam version; that restriction concerns gifting, not the friends list, so it is not evidence of a connection.
