Was the PS1 Called PSX? The Difference Between PS-X and PlayStation

PS-X or PSX was a development and press label for the original PlayStation, but Sony released the console as PlayStation—not PSX.

Yes—but with an important distinction. “PS-X” (also written “PSX”) was used as a development label and in contemporary gaming press; Sony’s released console was officially named PlayStation. Sony’s history identifies the first console as PlayStation, not PSX. Sony’s corporate history and PlayStation’s official timeline use that released name.

Was PS1 called PSX?

Not as its official retail name, according to Sony’s published histories. The original machine was released as the PlayStation. “PS-X” or “PSX” is associated with the console’s development and with some press coverage before and after the PlayStation name became public.

Label What it refers to Who used it
PlayStation The released console’s official name Sony’s branding and product history
PS-X / PSX A development label that also appeared in contemporary press Development-era usage and gaming press, as recounted by GamesRadar
PS one A smaller, lighter PlayStation redesign released in 2000 Sony’s name for that redesigned console

Why do people call the original PlayStation PSX?

The label appeared in press coverage during the console’s development. GamesRadar’s retrospective recounts that Edge described “PS-X” as a project name in May 1994, before the console’s true name was expected to be announced to the Japanese press. The magazine continued to use PS-X in its August 1994 issue, by which time the PlayStation name was public. GamesRadar’s account of the archival coverage supports describing PS-X as a press-used label; it does not show that Sony sold the console under that name.

The naming history also includes another internal project label. GamesRadar quotes former Sony product development director Phil Harrison recalling “Computer Entertainment Project Number One.” That recollection suggests project terminology was not necessarily one fixed name; it does not make PSX the console’s official consumer brand.

What name did Sony give the console, and when did it launch?

Sony’s corporate history says “PlayStation” was chosen to contrast with “workstation”—computers for work versus computers for play. The same history notes that PlayStation had also been tentatively used for an earlier proposed Nintendo/Sony CD-ROM system, a collaboration that did not come to fruition. Sony Group’s naming account explains the name’s rationale.

Sony’s official timeline calls the released hardware the first PlayStation console and gives these launch dates: PlayStation’s official history timeline lists December 3, 1994, in Japan; September 9, 1995, in North America; and September 29, 1995, in Europe.

Is PS one the same as PSX?

No. Sony uses PS one for the smaller, lighter redesign released in 2000. It is distinct from the PS-X/PSX development and press label associated with the original console. Sony’s timeline identifies the redesign as PS one, while referring to the 1994 system as PlayStation. Sony’s timeline makes that distinction.
