A community answer reports that your selection determines who appears in the final portion and accompanies the Lotus at the end. It also says you can switch between Drifter and Operator in the Origin System afterward, and that they share gear. Digital Extremes’ official pages do not spell out those specific consequences, so treat them as community-reported rather than an official guarantee.
What changes if you choose Drifter or Operator?
According to a recent Arqade community answer, the selected character plays the final section of The New War and takes the Lotus back to her room. In practical terms, the choice is about which Tenno you prefer to foreground in those closing scenes.

The same answer reports that, after the quest, you can switch freely between Drifter and Operator in the Origin System and that both have access to the same gear. The official Digital Extremes sources cited here do not document the scene outcome or post-quest switching behavior, so this should not be read as a developer guarantee.
Which one should you pick?

If neither matters much to you, pick either based on the ending you would rather watch. The community answer describes switching afterward, so it does not report this as a permanent replacement of one character by the other. The sources reviewed do not establish a lasting gameplay advantage, a reward difference, or a later quest path determined by this selection.

Do not confuse this with the permanent naming choice
The New War has a separate choice at the end: naming a character. Warframe Support says that name selection is permanent and cannot be changed by Support, although the character’s appearance can be customized after the quest. That warning concerns the name choice, not whether Drifter or Operator finishes the quest.
Drifter abilities in Duviri are a different matter
The Drifter has distinct abilities and weapons in Duviri, as explained in Digital Extremes’ Duviri guide. Those mechanics describe Drifter’s role in Duviri; they are not evidence that selecting Drifter for The New War gives you a permanent equipment or gameplay advantage elsewhere.

Before starting The New War
Quest preparation is separate from the Drifter-or-Operator decision. Warframe Support lists the access requirements and quest conditions:
- Complete Prelude to War.
- Own a Railjack with a Reliquary Drive installed.
- Own a Necramech.
- Be ready to play solo; The New War is solo-only.
Support says progress saves between quest segments and the quest can be paused, but loadout access is limited and ordinary activities are unavailable until you finish. It recommends getting NPC Crew from Ticker in Fortuna to help with Railjack combat.

Digital Extremes’ New War guide recommends upgrading your Necramech and Railjack and preparing a favored Warframe, weapons, upgraded Mods, and a configured Plexus. It also notes that you can reset the order of the Archon fights by aborting the current mission. These are readiness tips, not factors that make one character choice better.
