Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is worth considering if you want a demanding co-op action game built around first-person melee combat, teamwork, and replaying missions to develop characters. Its combat and character variety have earned favorable reviews, but repetitive scenarios, sharp difficulty spikes, and less engaging solo play make it a better fit for players who enjoy learning encounters with friends.
What kind of game is Vermintide 2?
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a four-player cooperative action game set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles world. Its central loop is to take a character and career through missions, fight waves of enemies, and improve your build and equipment as you return to the game’s challenges. Steam describes it as a game for up to four players, including as many as three friends joining you.

The emphasis is on close-quarters combat rather than simply shooting through crowds. Positioning, timing attacks, responding to enemy threats, and helping teammates shape the action. Steam lists five characters, branching careers, talent trees, difficulty tiers, and more than 50 weapon types; those are publisher storefront details, not independent assessments of how balanced or distinct every option feels.
What do reviews say about Vermintide 2?
Critics received the game favorably overall. Metacritic’s PC page, accessed in 2026, shows an 82/100 Metascore based on 54 critic reviews and labels the aggregate “Generally Favorable.” Its platform overview lists 81/100 for PlayStation 4 and 83/100 for Xbox One. These scores are snapshots of Metacritic’s database, not a timeless verdict or a measure of what every player will enjoy.
#1 Best Overall
- The Dark Pact: The combined forces of Chaos and Skaven are savage and merciless, and it will take a coordinated team effort to make it out alive.
- Choose Your Path: Choose between 15 unique careers, each with different appearances, abilities, talents and weapons.
- Master New Challenges: Experience unique scenarios and intense trials with our new Heroic Deeds System - consumable quests that will dramatically alter enemy composition, level settings, weapon use and mission objectives.
- The first DLC of Warhammer: Vermintide 2: The city of Bogenhafen is a mercantile city suffering from the spreading Nurgle corruption slowly overtaking the Reiklands.
- The second DLC of Warhammer: Vermintide 2: Brings you right back to where it all began - Ubersreik. After discovering a mysterious object Olesya sends the heroes back to Ubersreik to bring light to the object and to discover its connection to the past.
The praise centers on the feel of combat and the way co-op makes missions exciting. Steam’s store page displays PC Gamer’s review excerpt, “Vermintide 2’s combat and level design are so feverishly fun,” alongside an 8/10 rating. GameSpew’s April 19, 2018 review, as excerpted by Metacritic, called it “a formidable co-op package.”
The reservations matter just as much to a prospective player. Critics point to difficulty spikes and the need to repeat scenarios. A June 5, 2018 CD-Action excerpt on Metacritic describes replaying scenarios as built into the design and warns that repetition can eventually wear players down. That makes the game’s appeal strongest for people who enjoy refining tactics and builds over multiple runs, rather than those looking for a short campaign that constantly introduces new missions.
Is Vermintide 2 fun solo?
You can play without a full party of friends, but the game is designed around co-op and the experience is less compelling when relying on AI teammates. Solo is most suitable if you are comfortable learning missions and managing encounters without the coordination and spontaneity of a human group. If you are buying mainly for a strong single-player campaign, the game’s co-op-first design is a significant caveat.
Is Vermintide 2 better with friends?
For players drawn to the game’s core strengths, yes. Human teammates can coordinate against threats, help each other recover from dangerous situations, and make the repeated mission structure feel more varied through different group decisions. The challenge can also become a shared reason to improve rather than a frustrating spike. You do not need a fixed squad to understand the game, but friends who enjoy tactical co-op are the clearest audience for it.

Repetition is part of the progression loop: you revisit scenarios while developing characters, careers, and equipment. That structure gives players a reason to learn the maps and improve their execution, but it also means the game may feel samey if you need a steady stream of unfamiliar levels to stay engaged. Critics have explicitly raised replaying scenarios as a possible drawback.

Difficulty can rise sharply, so expect to learn enemy patterns and adapt rather than assume each mission will be a smooth, predictable run. Players who like tactical coordination and gradual mastery may find that challenge satisfying. If you prefer a forgiving action game or dislike restarting after a hard encounter, the spikes may blunt the fun.

There is no single DLC recommendation that suits every player. Steam’s listing includes paid career add-ons, cosmetic upgrades, and expansions such as Winds of Magic and Back to Ubersreik, as well as free content including Chaos Wastes and Versus. The right choice depends on whether you want additional careers, missions or modes, or purely cosmetic options.
Check the live store page for the platform and region where you plan to play before buying: catalog availability and prices can change, and the listed offerings may vary. If you are unsure whether you like the combat and mission loop, start with the base game rather than treating every add-on as necessary.

- Good fit: players seeking melee-focused co-op, character and build variety, and a challenge that rewards teamwork and learning.
- Less suitable: players who want a primarily solo experience, dislike replaying missions, or prefer a consistently gentle difficulty curve.
- Before you buy: consider whether you have people to play with and whether repeated runs are part of the appeal for you; check the current platform store for the included and optional content.
Metacritic’s favorable scores support the game’s reputation, but the more useful decision is whether its particular loop suits you: cooperative melee combat and mastery through repetition, with uneven difficulty and a weaker solo draw.
