Ermac joined Mortal Kombat 1 on April 16, 2024, but only for owners of the Kombat Pack, who received him in early access. He became widely available on April 23, 2024. Those two dates are the ones to keep apart: April 16 is the early-access start, and April 23 is the general release for the character.
When Ermac arrived
The Xbox Wire article announcing the character was written by Nick Nicastro, design manager at NetherRealm Studios, and dated April 16, 2024. It says Ermac joined the Mortal Kombat 1 roster that day for Kombat Pack owners. Wide availability followed on April 23, 2024. GamingBolt’s news coverage reports the same two dates.

Why Ermac was redesigned
Nicastro describes the team’s aim as evolving Ermac’s visual presentation. In his Xbox Wire piece, he writes:
#1 Best Overall
- A New Universe - Discover a new beginning, as crafted by the Keeper of Time and protector of Earthrealm, Fire God Liu Kang.
- Origins Reimagined - Familiar characters return with all new intertwined histories, interacting in brand new ways.
- New Kameo Fighters - Choose from a unique roster of Kameo fighting partners to assist you in battle.
- Immersive Story Campaign - Fight through a brand new story featuring your favorite Mortal Kombat characters like you’ve never seen them before.
- The Ultimate Fighting Franchise Returns - The Fight for Earthrealm is upon us. This is Mortal Kombat.
“For Mortal Kombat 1, we wanted to further evolve the visual presentation of Ermac by leaning heavily into certain horror inspirations, and then explore the idea that Ermac has been haunted by unique souls he has captured throughout his existence.”
That idea shapes the move set. The developer account names four souls: the Witch, the Old Woman, the Monster, and the Soldier. The article says the Witch’s soul emerges to perform Ermac’s classic Lift attack.
Rank #2
- Featuring Klassics such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Kano, as well as new characters such as Cassie Cage, Kotal Kahn, Ferra-Torr and D'Vorah, the roster will include fan favorites where both good and evil must battle it out.
- Mortal Kombat X offers three different versions for each playable character, all of which have their own fighting style, special moves, abilities and strategies.
- A deep story mode continues up to 25 years after the events of 2011's Mortal Kombat and advances the dark tale - introducing new characters such as Cassie Cage, daughter of fan favorites Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage.
- Mortal Kombat X introduces the next evolution of fighting with the return of X-ray and Finishing Moves that showcase brutal battles like never before with enhanced graphics and animations.
What Ermac can do
Nicastro highlights three areas of the kit. These are developer descriptions of intended design, not independent performance testing or a review.
- Air combos: The developer points to combo routes, especially in the air, as a major part of the character’s identity.
- Teleport options: The teleport can begin from the ground or from the air. It can be canceled into a ground or air version shortly before it happens, which creates different setup options.
- Mana Shield: This defensive option uses super meter in place of health to absorb incoming damage.
The article also mentions an upward soul attack that can launch an opponent and be canceled with a dash, along with a brutality based on the Lift move.

The arcade history behind the reveal
The Xbox Wire article connects Ermac’s long-running rumors to an “Error Macro” diagnostic label, ERMACS. It then recounts how Ermac eventually became a playable fighter in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. The article frames the Mortal Kombat 1 version as the latest step in that history rather than a fresh origin.

For a historical announcement, cite both release dates and attribute the mechanics to the developer. The Kombat Pack early-access date and the April 23 wide release are different milestones, and the sources do not establish anything further about platform-by-platform timing or differences in content between them.
