Greek myth does not give Zeus one universal list of weaknesses. In particular stories, he can be distracted by desire, threatened by a plot among the gods, or physically overcome for a time. Those episodes show that he can be manipulated or defeated temporarily—not that he permanently loses his kingship.
Can Zeus be tricked or distracted?
Yes. In Homer’s Iliad, Book 14, Hera distracts Zeus while the Trojan War is underway. She uses Aphrodite’s girdle to intensify his desire, then seduces him. Zeus acknowledges that desire has overcome him; while he sleeps, Poseidon helps the Greeks.
This is a story-specific vulnerability: Zeus’s desire gives Hera an opening to divert his attention and influence events. It does not establish that Hera can control him at will or that desire is a fixed weakness in every Greek account. The episode appears in Theoi’s collection of Hera myths, which presents passages attributed to Homer’s Iliad 14. Its English wording depends on the translation displayed there.
Did the other gods plot against Zeus?
A Homeric tradition recounts that Hera, Poseidon, and Athena contemplated binding Zeus. The plot is a challenge to his authority, but the account describes a threatened conspiracy—not a successful overthrow. It shows that his rule could be contested within the divine family without proving that the gods permanently displaced him. The episode is summarized in Theoi’s reference page on Hera.

Could Zeus be physically defeated?
In a separate mythic tradition, Typhoeus initially defeats Zeus and tears the sinews from his limbs, temporarily incapacitating him. Zeus is restored, confronts Typhoeus again, and defeats him. The episode therefore depicts a real temporary defeat, not a lasting loss of power or kingship. It belongs to a different strand of myth from Homer’s account of Hera and Zeus; Theoi’s Zeus compilation recounts the Typhoeus episode and represents multiple mythic traditions.

| Episode | Kind of vulnerability | What happens | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hera and Zeus in Iliad 14 | Desire and deception | Hera distracts Zeus; Poseidon aids the Greeks while Zeus sleeps. | A universal rule that Zeus is always easy to manipulate. |
| The binding plot | Political or familial challenge | Hera, Poseidon, and Athena contemplate binding him. | That the gods successfully remove him from power. |
| Zeus and Typhoeus | Temporary physical incapacity | Typhoeus initially defeats Zeus; Zeus recovers and wins a later encounter. | That Zeus remains defeated or loses his kingship. |
These are distinct episodes from different tellings, not parts of a single canonical system of limits. The stories support the narrower conclusion that Zeus can be distracted, challenged, and temporarily overcome. They do not establish a consistent rule that fate makes him powerless, or settle every question about the limits of his authority.
