For most PC games, start with the highest anisotropic filtering option available—often 16x—and keep it if performance remains satisfactory. It sharpens textures viewed at steep angles, such as roads or terrain receding into the distance. If frame rate is already a concern, compare levels in the game you play and lower the setting only if doing so makes a meaningful difference.
What anisotropic filtering changes
Texture filtering determines how a texture contributes color to the pixels on screen. When a surface is viewed at a sharp angle, its texture is stretched and distorted across the image. Anisotropic filtering adjusts how that texture is sampled, helping preserve detail in those oblique views.
The effect is most noticeable on long, receding surfaces—such as roads, floors, and terrain—not as a general increase in texture resolution. AMD describes the feature as improving textures on surfaces that appear far away or at odd angles, including roads and trees. That is vendor guidance, rather than an independent performance test. AMD’s Radeon settings guide explains the available levels and expected effect.
Which level should you choose?
AMD’s Radeon guidance lists 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x. Higher levels are intended to improve filtering, but the options and behavior available to you can vary with the game, driver, and graphics implementation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Start at the highest in-game option. In many games this is 16x, a sensible default if you want clearer angled textures.
- Reduce it only for a reason. If your frame rate is constrained, compare a lower level in the same scene or built-in benchmark.
- Prefer the game’s control when available. It is the clearest starting point for changing the setting. Driver overrides can affect application settings, but they may not work identically in every game.
There is no universally optimal level established for every title, GPU, API, or driver. Vulkan, for example, specifies that the particular anisotropic filtering scheme is implementation-dependent; see the Vulkan specification’s sampling section.
How much performance does it cost?
AMD characterizes the performance cost as small, but that does not guarantee the same impact on every system or game. In its 2016 Rise of the Tomb Raider graphics guide, NVIDIA reported a 1.2-frames-per-second difference between 2x and 16x anisotropic filtering in that specific PC test. Treat that as a result for that game and test, not a general benchmark for current hardware. NVIDIA’s guide provides the game-specific context.

To judge the trade-off on your own system, change one setting at a time and compare the same scene or built-in benchmark. Look at both texture clarity and measured frame rate. If the visual improvement is clear and the performance change is negligible in your test, keep the higher level.

Filtering can be controlled by an application, while graphics drivers may also expose overrides or texture-filtering optimizations. AMD documents driver overrides in its Radeon settings guide, and NVIDIA distinguishes driver texture-filtering optimizations from game controls in its Manage 3D Settings reference. As a result, a global driver choice should not be assumed to behave identically across all games.

If a driver adjustment appears to have no effect, check whether the game’s own setting is active and compare the same scene after changing only one control. The precise interaction depends on the game and graphics implementation; Microsoft’s explanations of texture filtering and anisotropic texture filtering describe the underlying concepts.
