Metroids are floating lifeforms artificially created by the Chozo to destroy the X parasite on the planet SR388. They can attach themselves to other organisms and drain their energy, making them dangerous even though they were designed to fight a greater threat. Their connection to Samus turns them from recurring enemies into a central part of the series’ story.
What are Metroids?
Metroids are fictional organisms in Nintendo’s Metroid series. The Chozo created them as a living countermeasure to the X parasite, a threat that can take over organic creatures and imitate them using their genetic information. Nintendo’s Metroid Dread character guide describes Metroids as floating creatures that attach to other organisms and absorb their energy.

Their name reflects their intended role: Nintendo’s Metroid Dread Report Vol. 3 says it comes from a Chozo word meaning “ultimate warrior.”
Why did the Chozo create them?
The Chozo created Metroids to destroy the X parasite on SR388. The X can infect living hosts and copy their genetic traits, allowing it to mimic other forms of life. Metroids, by contrast, are described as energy-draining organisms. That ability made them effective against the X, but also dangerous to other creatures they encountered.

Why are Metroids important to Samus?
Spoilers for Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Metroid: Samus travels to SR388 on a mission to eradicate the Metroids. At the end of the mission, she encounters a hatchling that imprints on her after seeing her first. Rather than destroy it, Samus brings it with her.
In Super Metroid, the hatchling sacrifices itself to save Samus from Mother Brain. Nintendo’s official series recap presents this relationship as part of the intertwined fates of Samus and the Metroids. Their role in her story is therefore not just that of an enemy species: one Metroid becomes a protector she has reason to care about.
Are Metroids and the X parasite the same thing?
No. They are distinct lifeforms with opposing roles in the story.
| Aspect | Metroids | X parasite |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Created by the Chozo | A parasitic lifeform on SR388 |
| Story role | Made to destroy the X | Can take over and mimic other organic life |
| Effect on other organisms | Attach to organisms and absorb their energy | Infect hosts and imitate them using genetic information |
Are Metroids extinct?
Nintendo’s Dread-era character guide describes the Metroids as extinct by the events of Metroid Dread. That is their status at that point in the official series recap; it does not establish what may happen in future installments.
