Gray Zone Warfare has three player-selectable PMC factions: Lamang Recovery Initiative (LRI), Mithras Security Systems, and Crimson Shield International (CSI). The game also has seven separate AI enemy factions, which players encounter rather than join. Those two groups are easy to confuse, but they serve different roles in the game.
Which factions can you join?
When creating an operator, players choose one of three private military companies. MADFINGER Games’ Story & Lore Overview and game overview describe their identities through in-world lore.

What are the seven AI factions?
Update 0.4, called Spearhead, divided AI enemies across Lamang into seven differentiated factions. MADFINGER says they have distinct appearances, faces, clothing, weapons, gear, and carried loot, and that each faction has its own boss. They are enemy groups, not additional choices during operator creation.

The developer’s Spearhead announcement confirms the count and distinguishing features but does not list the groups by name. There is therefore no supported full name-by-name list to give here.
Which Gray Zone Warfare faction should you choose?
Choose based on the playable PMC’s lore and the roleplay flavor you prefer: LRI’s rescue-and-cleanup framing, Mithras’s soldier-run and shared-spoils identity, or CSI’s hard-edged contractor image. The official materials cited here do not establish a current gameplay bonus or mechanical advantage for any one faction, so they do not support calling one objectively strongest.

Are the factions changing in Update 0.5?
As of October 8, 2026, Update 0.5, Rogue Ops, had not launched. MADFINGER’s October 4, 2026 announcement scheduled Supporter Preview for October 19 and full release for October 22, 2026. That announcement does not establish whether faction details would change after launch.
An older Early Access & Beyond overview described a planned limit of 16 players per faction. Because that is an older planning statement, it should not be treated as a confirmed current live-server cap.
