The portal-looking frame at the center of a Minecraft Ancient City is made of reinforced deepslate. The surrounding centerpiece uses other deepslate blocks, redstone components, and decorative materials, so those should not be confused with the frame itself.
What is the Ancient City portal-looking frame made of?
The frame is reinforced deepslate. A Minecraft Wiki inventory lists 56 reinforced deepslate blocks in each of its three central-structure variants; that is the count in the listed structure layouts, not a universal measurement of every generated city. See the Ancient City structure inventory.
What blocks surround the frame?
The larger center build contains several materials beyond the reinforced deepslate frame. Across the listed variants, these include:
- Deepslate blocks such as deepslate, cobbled and polished deepslate, deepslate bricks and tiles, chiseled deepslate, and cracked brick and tile variants.
- Redstone components, including redstone blocks and wire, lamps, repeaters, comparators, pistons, a target, and a sculk sensor.
- Decorative or supporting materials such as candles, soul lanterns, soul sand, glass, and wool.
The full inventory and component counts vary among the three listed center variants. These materials belong to the surrounding structure; they do not change the frame’s material.

Is it a working portal?
It is safest to call it a portal-looking frame, not a functioning portal. Mojang’s official Ancient City article does not describe the centerpiece as a portal, and the structure inventory records blocks rather than an activation mechanic. Its appearance alone is not evidence that players can activate it, enter it, or travel to another dimension.

Mojang describes the Ancient City as a settlement in the Deep Dark, but leaves the reason it was abandoned unresolved. Duncan Geere, the writer of Mojang’s article, says: “We’ll likely never know, but if you find any interesting clues in your investigations of ancient cities, please let us know.”
