What Conditions Do Minecraft Villagers Need to Restock?

Minecraft villagers need access to their claimed profession workstation to restock trades, with a limit of up to two restocks per Minecraft day. Bed requirements are not universal across editions.

Minecraft villagers restock exhausted trades when they can work at the workstation claimed for their profession. Mojang says a villager can restock up to twice per Minecraft day; a bed is not a universal requirement, and the exact current timing can vary by edition and version.

What a villager needs to restock

  • A profession and its matching workstation: the station must fit the villager’s job. Mojang gives a lectern for a librarian and a cauldron for a leatherworker as examples. See Mojang’s Village & Pillage update note.
  • Access to the claimed station: the villager must be able to work at its job-site block. As a practical setup, put the correct station beside the villager and check that this villager has claimed it. Proximity alone may not be enough if another villager has claimed the block.
  • Time to work: restocking happens as part of working, not on demand. Mojang’s note says villagers can restock up to two times per Minecraft day if they can work at their station.

Do villagers need a bed to restock?

Not as a universal condition. The Minecraft Wiki says villagers can restock without a bed, but bed and village-linking behavior can differ by edition. The available guidance does not establish a definitive current Bedrock bed-link rule, so avoid treating either “every villager needs a bed” or “beds never matter” as a rule for both editions.

How often do villagers restock?

Mojang’s 2019 Java Village & Pillage update note sets the limit at up to two restocks per Minecraft day, provided the villager can work at its workstation. This is a maximum, not a promise that a trade refreshes immediately or that the villager will restock continuously. The cited guidance does not establish an exact current restock time that applies across Java and Bedrock versions.

Why a villager may not restock

  1. Check that the villager has the profession you expect and that the nearby block is the correct workstation for that profession.
  2. Confirm that the villager has claimed that station. If several villagers and job-site blocks are close together, temporarily separate them or their stations to identify which villager is linked to which block.
  3. Make sure the villager can reach and work at its claimed station; placing it directly beside the villager is a useful diagnostic setup.
  4. Allow a work period, then check again. A villager cannot exceed two restocks in a Minecraft day.
  5. If you are troubleshooting a Bedrock setup involving beds or village links, do not assume Java guidance settles the issue; the edition-specific bed-link rule is not established here.

Java and Bedrock: what the guidance establishes

Edition context Workstation and restocking Bed guidance Scope
Java Mojang’s Village & Pillage note says villagers restock up to twice per day if they can work at their station. The Minecraft Wiki says a bed is not needed to restock. Mojang’s cited note describes Java’s Village & Pillage update; it does not establish an exact restock time for every current version.
Bedrock The cited material supports the workstation-access condition, but does not provide a definitive current Bedrock-specific restocking comparison. The current bed-link rule was not established. Do not apply an all-editions bed rule based on the Java note or the wiki statement alone.

A historical Java bug is not the usual explanation

Mojang’s bug tracker recorded a Java 1.14 issue in which villagers sometimes failed to restock even when next to or on top of their workstation; it was listed as fixed in 1.14.3 Pre-Release 1. That historical issue should not be treated as a general explanation for a villager failing to restock now.
