For Fallout 76 challenges, a “mutated enemy” is best understood as an enemy with an active gameplay mutation—not simply a creature whose species or lore involves mutation. The most reliable places to look are Daily Ops with a mutation and Mutated Public Events; check that the challenge counter advances as you defeat enemies.
What “mutated enemy” means for the challenge
Fallout 76 uses mutation both as a gameplay status and as a description of creatures in its world. For a challenge asking you to defeat mutated enemies, the relevant distinction is the active gameplay status. The available sources do not include an official rules definition, so this is a practical interpretation rather than a confirmed universal rule.
That distinction matters because a creature can sound mutated without counting toward the challenge. A Super Mutant’s name alone is not reliable evidence that it qualifies.
Where to find enemies that are likely to count
A November 27, 2023 Gamer Journalist guide by Nenad Grujić points players to Daily Ops mutation activities and Mutated Public Events as places to encounter mutated enemies. This is secondary guidance, not an official or current rules guarantee.

- Watch the challenge counter as you defeat enemies. If it does not advance for a particular species, focus on enemies encountered in an activity explicitly marked as mutated.
Do Super Mutants count?
That edge case is not settled. The 2023 guide makes broad claims about enemy species, including Super Mutants, but player reports describe ordinary Super Mutants failing to count for the challenge. Reports also mention other creatures that seem mutated but do not increment the counter. Treat the challenge counter, rather than a creature’s name or appearance, as the practical check.
What remains unclear
No official Fallout 76 rule page defining this challenge’s enemy-counting mechanic was identified. The treatment of ordinary Super Mutants, Mutant Hounds, enemies in non-mutated events, and newer versions of the challenge therefore should not be stated as certain. If the counter behaves differently in your current challenge, use its in-game progress as the deciding signal.
