There is no single reliable percentage for getting a Mending villager. In the traditional trade system, the commonly cited Java odds—2/3 for a librarian to offer an enchanted book at novice level—are odds of getting a book trade, not Mending specifically. Bedrock’s documented book-trade odds differ, and the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment changes the approach again.
What the published odds actually measure
A librarian’s chance to offer an enchanted book and the chance that the book is Mending are separate events. For the traditional system, the Minecraft Wiki’s librarian trade tables report these chances of an enchanted-book offer:
| Edition and trade tier | Chance of an enchanted-book offer |
|---|---|
| Java: novice, apprentice, or journeyman | 2/3 |
| Java: expert | 1/2 |
| Bedrock: novice, apprentice, or journeyman | 1/2 |
| Bedrock: expert | 1/3 |
These are book-slot probabilities, not Mending probabilities. The Java figures are associated with an older chart for Java Edition 1.21.4, and the reference table is version-sensitive; do not treat them as guaranteed odds for every current release. See the [Enchanted Book] and [Villager] tables.
When a book offer appears, its enchantment and level are randomized. The cited reference excludes Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Wind Burst from the listed pool, but the available information does not establish a complete, current eligible-pool size and distribution for every Java and Bedrock release. Without that, multiplying the book-slot chance by a guessed Mending share—or claiming a precise “one in X” chance—would be misleading.

Does the trade-rebalance experiment change the odds?
Yes. If Villager Trade Rebalance is enabled in the world, librarian books are tied to biome. Mojang’s Snapshot 23w31a identifies Mending among the special books associated with swamp librarians. The Java Edition 1.20.2 release notes explain that these biome-specific special books are available at master level.
Under that optional experiment, the practical route is to have a librarian in a swamp biome and level the villager to master; do not expect an ordinary first-trade reroll to offer Mending. The experiment is not a universal default: check whether it was enabled when the world was created and which edition and release you are playing.

How to try for Mending under traditional trades
- Find an unemployed adult villager and place a lectern so the villager can take the librarian profession.
- Inspect the novice offers before completing any trade. If the offer is not useful, remove and replace the lectern to refresh the offers, provided the villager can access and claim the workstation under your edition’s rules.
- Repeat the inspection and workstation refresh as needed. No defensible fixed number of rerolls or time-to-Mending can be given from the documented odds.
- Once you complete a trade with that villager, treat its offers as locked; do not expect workstation replacement to reroll that villager’s trades afterward.
Repeated attempts should not automatically be treated as independent rolls with a simple cumulative probability. A secondary summary of Java 26.1 notes says rerolls remain randomized but their sequence is determined by the world seed; that claim is version-specific and should not be generalized to other releases or editions. The summary is not an official Mojang release note.

Mending is a treasure enchantment: it repairs an enchanted item using experience. Minecraft’s creator documentation describes the experience-repair effect. The Minecraft Wiki’s Mending reference lists librarian trades and other loot routes; it also notes that Mending cannot be obtained from an enchanting table.

Check these details before following an odds guide
- Edition: The documented Java and Bedrock book-slot chances differ.
- Trade rules: Traditional trades and the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment call for different strategies.
- Release: A table tied to an older version should not be presented as a universal current rate.
- Probability being discussed: A book-slot chance is not the chance of Mending conditional on a book, nor the probability of finding Mending after several attempts.
