To begin sanguine art, you need a sanguine (red-chalk) pencil or stick and drawing paper with enough texture to hold a dry mark. Toned paper, white chalk, black chalk and a blending stump are optional: they help with the traditional three-chalk approach or with particular effects, but they are not required for every sanguine drawing.
What sanguine means
Sanguine is red chalk, traditionally made from red iron oxide. The National Portrait Gallery describes its characteristic warmth and softness, while the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’s CAMEO materials database defines it as natural red clay containing iron ocher and also uses the term for sticks colored with red iron oxide. Sanguine is sold in pencil and crayon or stick formats.
Its color is not fixed. Musée d’Orsay describes a range from orange-red to purplish brown, depending on iron-oxide concentration. When choosing a shade, look for the degree of warmth or brownness you want rather than assuming there is one standard sanguine color.
The two essentials
A sanguine pencil or stick
This is the defining material. Choose a pencil if you prefer a familiar, narrow format for drawing; choose a stick if you prefer a chalk or crayon format. The sources establish both formats but do not show that one is universally better.

Textured drawing paper
Use paper intended for drawing with some surface texture. Dry chalk needs a surface that can hold its marks; a practical materials guide recommends textured paper for sanguine and Conté. There is no established mandatory paper brand, weight or size. White paper is also a possible surface—the choice of toned paper depends on the method you want to use.
Optional materials and when they help
| Material | What it does | When to add it |
|---|---|---|
| Toned paper | Provides a middle value between dark marks and light highlights. | Choose it for the traditional trois crayons approach; it is not necessary for every sanguine drawing. |
| White chalk or a white drawing pencil | Adds highlights and brings out light areas. | Useful on toned paper, especially when working in trois crayons. |
| Black chalk | Extends the range of dark values. | Add it if you want the full three-chalk approach rather than sanguine alone. |
| Blending stump | Helps soften or blend chalk marks. | Optional; use one if you want softer transitions. Chalk can also be smudged or blended without making a stump essential. |
In trois crayons—literally “three crayons”—artists combine sanguine, black chalk and white chalk on toned paper. The paper acts as the middle tone, while white chalk supplies highlights and black chalk deepens shadows. Musée d’Orsay describes this three-chalk method, and the National Portrait Gallery notes the use of contrasting white touches to heighten drawings.

Choose a setup for the drawing you want to make
- For a minimal start: get one sanguine pencil or stick and textured drawing paper.
- For highlights: add white chalk or a white drawing pencil. Toned paper makes those light marks especially useful, but white chalk is not a requirement for sanguine work.
- For a broader value range: use toned paper with sanguine, white chalk and black chalk in the trois crayons method.
- For softer transitions: add a blending stump if you want a dedicated tool for blending.
The National Portrait Gallery’s technique resource describes chalk as a dry medium that can be blended. For a first drawing, start with the sanguine medium and paper; add other materials only when you want their specific effects.
