In Jenny’s Mod, the Dragon Staff is a command item for Kobolds. In the Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge port documented by its project README, you sneak and use the staff to cycle through five Kobold orders, then use it normally to apply the selected order to nearby Kobolds. The Kobold character reference adds that these creatures treat a player holding a dragon staff as an equal in strength. Those two points are the core of what the item does. The control scheme, however, is documented for one port and one Minecraft version, so it should not be assumed to match every release.
How the staff issues orders in the 1.21.1 NeoForge port
The control sequence below comes from the README of the Mine335 project, which describes its Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge port of Jenny’s Mod. It is project documentation for that port, not a statement about the original mod’s behavior in every version.
- Hold the Dragon Staff in your hand and sneak (hold the Shift key by default in Minecraft).
- While sneaking, use the staff to cycle the selected Kobold order. Repeat until the order you want is chosen.
- Stop sneaking and use the staff normally. The selected order is applied to Kobolds within range.
The README lists five orders, in this sequence:
- Follow: Kobolds accompany the player.
- Stay: Kobolds hold their position.
- Guard: Kobolds take up a protective role.
- Return home: Kobolds go back to their assigned home point.
- Wander: Kobolds roam on their own.
The README gives the order names but not a detailed explanation of each behavior, and it does not state the search radius used to determine which Kobolds are “nearby.” Players who need those specifics should test them in their own installation.
What the Kobold lore says about the staff
The Jenny Mod characters page describes Kobolds this way: “Although weak, they offer labor in exchange for protection and will view players wielding a dragon staff as equally strong.” The page is unattributed and describes the creatures’ in-world attitude. It does not document any controls, so the staff’s commands and its lore role should be read as separate pieces of information.

Which versions this covers
Jenny’s Mod has more than one implementation. The HeatCraft README describes another recreation as an unfinished early release and lists the Dragon Staff among its Kobold gameplay systems. That README does not provide the five-order control list, so it cannot confirm the same controls.
Based on the sources reviewed, it is not established whether the original release and all later ports share the same order sequence. The five-order scheme should be treated as the documented behavior of the 1.21.1 NeoForge port only.

If the controls do not match
- Confirm the Minecraft version and loader (NeoForge, Forge, or Fabric) you are running against the port’s stated requirements.
- Check the project’s release notes or in-game documentation for the version you installed.
- If sneak-use does nothing, verify that you are holding the staff in your main hand and that the Kobolds are close enough to receive the order.
