Ama’shan means “Honor of the Goddess.” In World of Warcraft, it is an honorific title that Maiev Shadowsong gives the player character during the Night Elf heritage quest “Honor of the Goddess.” It is a title for the player, not a stock word in ordinary dialogue.
What the word translates to
The Darnassian language reference lists Ama’shan as a title with the meaning “Honor of the Goddess.” Darnassian is the language of the Night Elves. That reference is community-maintained rather than an official Blizzard glossary, so treat its translation as the best available lore reference, not as a publisher-issued dictionary entry. The in-game quest supports the same reading, which is why the translation is widely accepted among players.
How the title is introduced in the quest
The Night Elf heritage quest “Honor of the Goddess” is where the name is explained. Its objective asks the player to learn what Ama’shan means from Maiev Shadowsong. Maiev’s dialogue at the end of the quest connects the title to the honor the character carries, and she then addresses the player by the name.
Where the quest sits
The quest belongs to the Night Elf heritage storyline. It is a story milestone that confers a title on the character, so the name works as a recognition of the player’s standing rather than a phrase that appears in conversation with other characters.

Maiev’s line in the quest
The quest’s completion dialogue includes this line from Maiev Shadowsong, a fictional character speaking in the game:
“You carry the honor of the goddess with you, and you should carry the name as well.”

The “friend” reading and other confusion
Players searching for this term sometimes ask what it means in the way a single word would be defined, and some discussions suggest a “friend” interpretation. That is player speculation. It is not supported by the Darnassian reference or by the quest dialogue, and it should not be repeated as a translation.

The word also should not be broken into syllables and glossed one piece at a time. Neither the reference nor the quest provides a grammatical breakdown of its components, so any word-by-word etymology would go beyond what the sources establish. The reliable answer is the translated meaning: “Honor of the Goddess.”
