A Copper Hoe lets you till up to three tiles in a straight line with one charged use. You can buy the upgrade at the Blacksmith for 2,000g and five Copper Bars. It also keeps the Hoe’s other uses, including digging Artifact Spots.
What the Copper Hoe does
The basic Hoe tills one tile at a time. With the Copper upgrade, hold the tool-use action to charge it, then release to till up to three tiles in a straight line. Aim along the row or column you want to prepare; the upgrade does not create a three-by-three patch.

The Hoe is still used to till soil for farming and to dig Artifact Spots. It can also till exposed soil or sand in places such as the Mines, Beach, and Desert. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Hoe reference describes these uses.
How to get the Copper Hoe
- Bring your Hoe, 2,000g, and five Copper Bars to the Blacksmith.
- Request the Hoe upgrade. Tool upgrades take the tool out of use while the Blacksmith works on it, so arrange your farm tasks with that downtime in mind.
The Blacksmith reference covers the upgrade service and process.

How its tilling area compares with later upgrades
Each grade increases the Hoe’s maximum charged tilling area, but the shape changes as well as the size:
| Hoe grade | Maximum charged tilling area |
|---|---|
| Copper | 3 tiles in a straight line |
| Steel | 5 tiles in a straight line |
| Gold | 3×3 area (9 tiles) |
| Iridium | 6×3 area (18 tiles) |
Those areas are summarized in the Wiki’s Hoe upgrade reference. Copper is an early improvement for preparing rows, while the later grades cover wider or rectangular patches.

Watch for objects when tilling
A Hoe strike can remove objects on the tiles it hits. The Wiki notes an exception: objects on squares with crafted floors or paths are not removed by the Hoe. If you are tilling near placed items, the floor or path can help protect them from an accidental hit. See the Hoe’s tilling notes.
