Iron-golem spawn requirements depend on your Minecraft edition. In Java Edition, villagers summon golems when the right villager and group conditions are met; either gossip or panic can trigger an attempt. In Bedrock Edition, a village needs at least 10 villagers and 20 beds, working villagers with bed links, a nearby player within simulation distance, and a valid spawn space near the village center. Check your edition and version before copying a farm design.
Java and Bedrock use different spawning rules
| Requirement | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| How spawning starts | A villager attempts to summon a golem while gossiping or panicking. | The village meets population, bed, work, player-distance, and spawn-space conditions. |
| Villagers and beds | A qualifying nearby group is required; the cited mechanics references do not establish one simple current numeric checklist for every situation. | At least 10 villagers and 20 beds; every villager must be linked to a bed. |
| Work requirement | No Bedrock-style workstation threshold is specified in the cited Java mechanics. | At least 75% of villagers must have worked at their workstations the previous day. |
| Player distance | The cited mechanics do not specify the Bedrock simulation-distance requirement. | The village must be within a player’s simulation-distance volume. |
| Spawn location | Spawning is tied to villager summoning conditions; a farm platform is not guaranteed to be selected. | An eligible spawn space is needed near the village center. Exact spawn-volume geometry varies by version. |
For detailed mechanics, see the Minecraft Wiki iron-golem farming guide and village mechanics reference. These are community references; Mojang’s release notes document specific changes rather than one complete current specification.
Java Edition requirements
In Java, golems are summoned by villagers rather than generated simply because a village has enough beds. Villagers can attempt a summon while gossiping or panicking. A villager must also have slept and must not have recently seen an iron golem, and a qualifying nearby villager group is required. The mechanics reference describes these conditions, but older snapshot thresholds should not be treated as a complete current rule.
Does Java require a zombie?
No single trigger is mandatory: panic is one way to prompt summoning, while gossip is another. A farm that uses a zombie is using the panic route; it is not proof that all Java golem spawning requires one.

Bedrock Edition requirements
For Bedrock, the cited village mechanics reference lists these conditions together:
- The village has at least 10 villagers and 20 beds.
- At least 75% of villagers worked at their workstations the previous day.
- Every villager is linked to a bed.
- The village is within a player’s simulation-distance volume.
- An eligible spawn space is available near the village center.
Spawn clearance matters. In the Bedrock 1.20.40 changelog, Mojang says: “Iron Golems no longer spawn naturally in 2-block-high spaces where they would start suffocating.” That is a confirmed constraint, not a complete description of the spawn volume. Check the Bedrock 1.20.40 changelog and a version-matched mechanics reference before relying on exact farm dimensions.

Why your iron golems may not be spawning
- Confirm your edition and version. Java and Bedrock are mechanically different, and updates can alter behavior. The Minecraft Help edition guide explains that players need matching editions to join hosted games; it does not make their mechanics interchangeable.
- If you are on Java, check the villager conditions. Make sure villagers can gossip or panic, have slept, have not recently seen a golem, and that enough villagers meet the group conditions.
- If you are on Bedrock, check village links and activity. Verify the 10-villager and 20-bed minimums, confirm every villager is linked to a bed, and make sure at least 75% worked the previous day.
- Check player range and spawn clearance on Bedrock. Stay within simulation distance and confirm there is an eligible space near the village center, with sufficient height for the golem.
- Look for other valid spawn locations. If golems appear outside your intended platform, the relevant mechanics describe spawning around villagers or the village center; they do not guarantee that a particular farm platform will be chosen.
- Recheck after an update. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.17.30 changelog records that iron-golem spawning logic was tweaked “to better match Java Edition.” The later 1.20.40 change addressed suffocation spaces. These changes show why older farm instructions may not match a newer version; they are not a full list of current rules.
Use a version-matched farm design
Before building or repairing a farm, identify whether the world is Java or Bedrock and note its game version. Use a guide for that edition and version, especially for exact spawn-platform dimensions and village-center geometry. The Java 19w12b snapshot notes are historical: they describe a change to gossip thresholds in that 2019 snapshot, not a standalone specification of current Java requirements.
