The four classic ghosts are Blinky, Inky, Clyde, and Pinky. The small dots Pac-Man collects are Pac-Dots, while the larger power-ups are Power Pellets.
What are the four classic Pac-Man ghosts called?
The classic ghosts are Blinky, Inky, Clyde, and Pinky. The official PAC-MAN character page describes them this way:
- Blinky is the leader of the ghosts, known for being quick and persistent.
- Inky is unpredictable: sometimes he chases Pac-Man, and sometimes he runs away.
- Clyde is a free-spirited wanderer who explores the maze.
- Pinky plans ahead and tries to anticipate and ambush Pac-Man.
What are the dots and big dots called?
The small collectibles are Pac-Dots. The larger items are Power Pellets. They are maze items, not names for the ghosts.
On the official character page, Bandai Namco says, “Eat POWER-PELLETS and the Ghosts turn to blue!” Pac-Man can then chase and chomp them. The PAC-MAN 256 page also uses “PAC-DOTS” and “power pellet.”

Are those names the same in every Pac-Man game?
Not necessarily. Blinky, Inky, Clyde, and Pinky are the four classic ghosts, but later games can add characters or use different item names. For example, the official PAC-MAN Party Royale page features another ghost, Itchy, and calls its power-up a Super Pellet.
Does Pac-Man have other names or naming history?
The official PAC-MAN history page says the game was initially released in English as “PUCK MAN” before the name changed to “PAC-MAN.” It also notes that the ghosts have Japanese and English names; it does not provide enough detail there to establish the origin of each English name.
