Regular Shiny Gengar is muted purple in modern Pokémon games, not white. Older games and some other media show it in darker or bluer shades. The striking white or very pale shiny belongs to Mega Gengar.
What color is regular Shiny Gengar?
In later main-series games and services such as Pokémon HOME, Pokémon GO, and Pokémon Sleep, regular Shiny Gengar is generally a subdued or dull purple, with reddish-pink eyes. The exact appearance can vary between sprites, 3D models, lighting, and displays; the available references do not establish an official hex code or one universal color palette.
Bulbapedia’s overview of Gengar appearances summarizes the variations across Pokémon media. For a direct sprite comparison across game generations, see Pokémon Database’s Shiny-dex.
Why do some images show a different shade?
Regular Shiny Gengar has not looked identical in every appearance. Generation II games and several side games depict it as very dark, near-black purple with bright magenta eyes. Some other appearances, including Pokémon Shuffle, Pokémon Duel, and the film Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, use a lighter, bluer look. These are variations in depiction, not evidence that every image should match one fixed shade.

When two images seem to disagree, check the form first, then the game or media source. Sprite or model design and display conditions can also affect how the color appears.

Not in its regular form. The white or very pale appearance people often mean is Shiny Mega Gengar, a distinct Mega form. The Pokémon Company International’s March 19, 2026 announcement for the Pokémon TCG Pocket expansion Mega Shine confirms that Shiny Mega Gengar ex is featured, though the announcement does not describe its color in text: official announcement.
