The bomb is a powerful, often comically excessive strike, and its code has circulated as a meme for a dramatic or decisive action. That identifies a recognizable game reference; it does not establish why the accused wrote it or prove a political motive.
What does the Helldivers 2 code mean?
WIRED reported that one casing bore the words “Hey Fascist! Catch!” followed by up, right, and three down arrows. The outlet identified the arrows as an apparent input for the Eagle 500kg bomb, a strike players can call in during Helldivers 2. The code is therefore more than a generic sequence of arrows: it points to a particular game action. WIRED’s September 12, 2025 report discusses the inscription and reference.

In the game, the Eagle 500kg bomb delivers a powerful strike. Outside the game, the code became a joke about doing something big, forceful, or exaggerated. Don Caldwell, editor in chief of Know Your Meme, told WIRED, “That’s maybe a cheeky way of expressing it on the casing.” The meme reading explains how the reference can work as a punchline; it cannot reveal the writer’s private intent.
The game context
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative third-person shooter released on February 8, 2024, according to its Steam store page. Steam identifies Arrowhead Game Studios as developer, PlayStation Publishing LLC as publisher, and describes squads of up to four Helldivers. The game’s talk of “managed democracy” and its military slogans are satirical, in a story WIRED likens to Starship Troopers, with players fighting fictional alien enemies. That context makes the word “Fascist” legible as part of a provocative game-and-meme reference, but it is not proof of an ideology or motive.

What the other reported inscriptions refer to
Accounts of the prosecutors’ filing described several different kinds of references on the casings, rather than one consistent set of political slogans. They included a “Bella Ciao” lyric, furry-internet slang, and a crude taunt directed at the reader. WIRED describes “Bella Ciao” as an Italian folk song associated with postwar anti-fascist movements that has also appeared in pop culture and video games; it identifies the “OwO” wording as a furry-related meme and the last line as online taunting. The Washington Post’s September 19, 2025 account also notes the song’s varied uses and the taunting style’s resemblance to online games and chatrooms.
Al Jazeera reproduced four messages from the prosecutors’ filing, including the phrase “Hey Facist! Catch!” with that spelling. The mix of references matters: knowing where one phrase comes from does not supply a single key that decodes all of them. Al Jazeera’s September 17, 2025 report attributes the messages to the filing.

Do the memes explain the accused’s motive?
No. The game-code identification is comparatively specific; a claim about motive is a different and less certain kind of conclusion. The Washington Post reported that the Critical Internet Studies Institute urged “caution in reading too much” into the details, describing the memes as “almost deliberately ambiguous.” TIME quoted Joan Donovan, a Boston University assistant professor of journalism and meme-culture researcher, saying memes can show what someone finds funny or signal affiliation with online subcultures, while also emphasizing their ambiguity. These are interpretations of meme culture, not diagnoses of the accused. TIME’s September 13, 2025 report covers that uncertainty.
J.M. Berger, an author and extremism expert, told The Washington Post: “It’s a chicken-and-egg situation as far as whether these [online] spaces attract killers or create them, but these spaces definitely shape the kind of killer someone will be.” That is a broad observation about online spaces, not a finding that Helldivers 2 caused this crime or that its players share the accused’s views. WIRED notes that the game is satire and that most players understand the joke; The Washington Post emphasizes that the references are broadly shared, not exclusive signals of a particular ideology.

Reporting on messages attributed to the accused also said he described the inscriptions as “mostly a big meme” in messages to his roommate and romantic partner. That wording, reported from case materials, is relevant context but does not settle the meaning of every inscription or establish what the messages meant to others. Early claims about political identity are another reason to avoid turning internet speculation into fact: an Associated Press fact-check said Utah records showed Robinson was registered to vote but unaffiliated with either major political party, and that a claim he belonged to the Democratic Socialists of America was false. Those records do not decode the memes. The AP fact-check, published September 13, 2025, addresses those claims.
What is known about the case
As of the Associated Press report published July 7, 2026, Robinson had not entered a plea, and a preliminary hearing was underway as prosecutors sought to show the case should go to trial. The AP also reported that the defense had challenged aspects of the evidence and sought to remove the death penalty. These are reported procedural developments, not a verdict; the status may have changed since that report. The Associated Press reported the hearing update.
