What Blocks Can’t Ghasts Break? Blast Resistance Explained

Blocks survive ghast fireballs when their blast resistance absorbs the explosion. Here are the thresholds, examples, and limits to check before building.

Blocks survive a ghast fireball when their blast resistance is high enough to absorb the explosion’s force. The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki fireball reference gives 4.034 as the amount of resistance needed to absorb all of a fireball’s blast force, and cites basalt, at 4.2, as an example that clears it. Water, lava, obsidian, and bedrock are listed as indestructible by explosions under normal means. The rest of this guide explains what those numbers mean, where they stop applying, and how to build with them safely.

How blast resistance decides what survives

Ghast fireballs can destroy blocks, and they also set whatever they hit on fire. Minecraft’s official Ghast article states this directly: “These projectiles can destroy blocks and set whatever they hit on fire.” The official article describes the behavior but does not publish a block-by-block list.

The deciding property is blast resistance, not how hard a block is to mine. A block with a high mining hardness can still be blown apart by an explosion if its blast resistance is low, and a block that takes a long time to break by hand can be unaffected by a blast. When you plan a Nether bridge or a shelter wall, check blast resistance first.

Thresholds and examples

The Minecraft Wiki’s fireball reference gives 4.034 as the blast resistance needed to absorb all of a fireball’s force. Basalt, at 4.2, is cited as clearing that figure. The same reference notes that blocks with resistance as low as 3.5 may still survive, depending on where the fireball strikes. The Minecraft Wiki’s explosion reference separately lists water, lava, obsidian, and bedrock as indestructible by explosions under normal means, and notes that fences and less resistant blocks can be destroyed by fireballs.

Block or group Stated status Source
Water Indestructible by explosions under normal means; blast resistance value not stated Minecraft Wiki, Explosion
Lava Indestructible by explosions under normal means; blast resistance value not stated Minecraft Wiki, Explosion
Obsidian Indestructible by explosions under normal means; blast resistance value not stated Minecraft Wiki, Explosion
Bedrock Indestructible by explosions under normal means; blast resistance value not stated Minecraft Wiki, Explosion
Basalt Blast resistance 4.2, above the 4.034 threshold for absorbing all fireball force Minecraft Wiki, Fireball
Blocks at about 3.5 May survive a fireball, depending on the point of impact Minecraft Wiki, Fireball
Fences and less resistant blocks Can be destroyed by fireballs Minecraft Wiki, Explosion

The table reflects what these references state. Where a source does not give a numeric resistance for a block, the cell says so rather than filling in an estimate.

Why the point of impact matters

The 4.034 figure is the reference’s threshold for absorbing all blast force, and the 3.5 figure marks blocks that may still survive. The gap between them is the impact geometry: where the fireball hits a block, and which neighboring blocks take the force, changes the result. For that reason, a block near the threshold is a gamble rather than a guarantee. If a wall must hold, choose a block that clears 4.034 with margin, or use one of the explosion-proof blocks listed above where the material suits the build.

What the rule does not cover

The blast-resistance threshold describes fireball explosions in Minecraft as the Minecraft Wiki reference documents them. It does not mean the block is safe from every kind of explosion, and it does not establish a complete vanilla block list.

  • Official sources are general. Minecraft’s Ghast article explains the behavior but gives no block-by-block thresholds. The 4.034 and 4.2 values come from a community-maintained wiki and should be treated as secondary-source figures.
  • Bedrock block configuration works differently. Bedrock’s block documentation, hosted in Mojang’s bedrock-samples Blocks reference, describes the destructible_by_explosion component. Its explosion_resistance field raises resistance as the value increases, and a block set as not destructible by explosion is indestructible by them. This covers block configuration in general, including blocks defined by creators, and does not list every vanilla block.
  • Edition and version parity is not established. The sources consulted here do not confirm that Java Edition and Bedrock Edition share the same values. Check the numbers against your own edition and version before relying on them for a specific build.
  • Older figures circulate. Some older posts cite much higher thresholds, such as blast resistance 15 or 26. Those figures are not confirmed by a primary source in this guide, so do not build around them.

Checking a block before you build with it

  • Blast resistance: confirm the block clears 4.034 with margin for the wall you plan, not just the bare minimum.
  • Availability: confirm you can obtain the block in quantity in your version and game mode, since some strong blocks are rare or difficult to collect.
  • Utility: decide whether the wall needs to be transparent, emit light, or match an existing design, because explosion resistance alone does not decide those properties.
  • Fire: remember that fireballs set what they hit on fire, so flammable materials near the impact point can ignite even when the block itself survives.
  • Verification: test the design in your own world on your edition and version before committing a large build to it.

Ghasts can also be dealt with by batting a fireball back toward the ghast, which the official Ghast article describes. That approach avoids the question of which blocks survive, but it does not replace checking the blocks you intend to use.
