In the original Dark Deity (2021), bonds are a relationship and conversation system. Units that fight near each other grow closer over the course of the game, and the game lets you view the conversations that come out of those relationships. The official descriptions available for this article do not establish that bonds grant combat bonuses, so the combat question needs a more careful answer than a yes or no.
What the bond system is designed to do
The developer’s own description is the most direct statement of purpose. In its Kickstarter FAQ, the project team wrote that Dark Deity “has a unit bond mechanic that allows units to become close friends over the course of the game – allowing you to view conversations between these units as they become closer.” The FAQ entry was last updated September 2, 2020, so it reflects the design as described before release.
The Steam store listing, which describes the game as single-player and dates its release to June 15, 2021, uses similar language. It says players “watch characters bond together on the battlefield and their relationships evolve through 400 individual conversations.” Both descriptions frame bonds as a story feature that rewards keeping particular units in the party and on the field together.
What the 400 conversations figure does and does not mean
The 400 figure is the advertised total of individual conversations in the Steam listing. It is not a count of conversations for every possible pair of units, and it does not tell you that all of them are reachable in a single playthrough. The listing does not explain how many conversations a given pair has, so do not treat the number as a guide to how much of the story any one run will show.

What official sources leave undocumented
The official material available here is silent on several points that players usually want to know:
- How bond progress is earned, such as by fighting together, by turns spent adjacent, or by something else.
- The number of bond ranks, or what each rank unlocks.
- The full unlock conditions for individual conversations.
- Whether bonds provide passive combat effects, such as stat increases or attack bonuses.
The absence of these details in the official sources is a documentation gap. It is not proof that bonds have no mechanical effect, and it should not be read that way.

Why player reports on combat effects conflict
A 2021 Steam community discussion contains mixed reports on whether bonds affect combat, and some posters mention possible adjacency bonuses. Those posts are informal player observations, not statements from the developer or publisher, and they do not agree with one another. Treat them as leads to test rather than confirmed mechanics.

Don’t confuse it with Dark Deity 2
Searches sometimes turn up the phrase “What do bonds do, exactly?” That wording comes from a discussion of Dark Deity 2, a separate sequel. Its mechanics should not be assumed to match the original game, and nothing in that thread establishes how bonds work in the 2021 title.

How to check combat effects yourself
Because the official sources do not settle the combat question, the most reliable way to answer it for your own copy is to test it. Keep two units in the same battle, note their stats and combat results, then compare them against the same units in a fight where they are kept apart, changing only the positioning. Record what you see and repeat the test before drawing a conclusion, since a single battle can be affected by randomness. If you find a consistent effect, that is useful evidence, but it should be checked against the developer’s own statements before being presented as a rule.
If the developer or publisher later documents bond mechanics in detail, that documentation should take precedence over player testing.
